Sorry if this is too much information, but when I eat pears I get major diarrhea, gas and bloating. If I eat only 1 pear, I'm okay. But a monomeal of pears - oh, it kills me! I had 4 pears for breakfast this morning and an hour or two later I was in the bathroom with butt pee. I had to go every 15-30 minutes! Awful. They really clean me out, I guess. It only seems to be the soft pears. I have no problem with Asian pears.
I don't think I can live like this, so I'm giving up (soft) pears. It is a shame, because they taste really good, and I enjoy having them in the fall. I like them, but they don't like me!
Does anyone else have this problem? Or do you have any ideas on how I might remedy the situation? If not, I'll just stop eating them. Maybe they just don't agree with me for some reason.
This link on FODMAPS might be useful to you, it helped me understand why some foods made me feel terrible.
For me it was the excess polyols, as I noticed that the list coincided with my own list of problematic foods. As it goes, eating pears to reach my caloric needs isn't really sustainable anyway, they're not particularly dense and i'd need so many that the volume would render me useless for quite a while after eating. There are loads of tastier fruit!
I don't get diarrhea, but juicy fruits give me weird and intense heating [not burning] sensation somewhere right under sholders/above chest - hard to describe.....but it's a bit painful. Soft pears cause that too and make me bloated. The pain is gone usually after ~25mins, but it's quite strong and intense.
I remember I saw "Raw Macita" [youtube & 30BAD] video about intense pain and/or bloating, etc., after eating fruit. She mentioned smthng about some mineral/vitamin deficiency. I can't remember correcty, though... maybe copper? I really, really could be mistaking.
How about other juicy fruits? Is that linked only to pears? If other juicy fruits goes fine, I doubt there is some deficiency thoug :]
p.s. I'm not an expert; just my own observations.
I looked up "Raw Macita"...maybe I misspelled it, but looks like there is no such thing on YT and 30BAD anymore... :/
Are you thinking of Chromium - for the deficiency?
Yeah, most other fruits I seem to do fine with.
Yes, I meant chromium :]
Oh, yes, there is the video! Thanks Ednshell!
you might try eating them next year after having healed your guy a while on HCRV.
a monomeal of pears is definitly going to put you into a toxic dose of sorbitol. Max 3 pears at a time.
I doubt that someone with normal digestion eating fruits with sorbitol would have any problems. Lots of folks eat large meals of pears and other fruits with sorbitol without any problem.
did you go to the bathroom with them?
So sorbitol is the culprit, huh? Good to know.
A quick internet search says these fruits all contain sorbitol: apples, pears, prunes, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, dates, raisins.
Apples have given me problems at times in the past (not currently). Prunes have a laxative effect on everyone, don't they? :) Peaches... I don't know. It is so hard to find good organic peaches in stores that I don't eat very many peaches at all. That is a shame as peaches are one of the most delicious fruits out there. I think cherries have given me problems in the past too.
