So I have finally discovered that I am not crazy, and that this is something REAL that affects me and many other people. This summer I was enjoying lots of fresh fruits when my mouth and skin freaked out! My mouth got all itchy and stingy and I got little blister bumps on my lips (that went away in like an hour or so) But my face would get really flushed and stingy and stay that way for hours. I noticed it mostly after grapes and tomatoes.
I have major pollen allergies, and if you do too than you may also have Oral Allergy Syndrome. I am happy that we have had some frosts here and the rag weed and other pollen plants I am allergic to are now dead for the season. Because this only affects people during the height of allergy season. There is a protein in certain fruits that trigger an allergic response because it is so similar to the pollen one is allergic to, BUT it affects us orally. I know, weird, right? I googled a search for "grapes stingy itchy mouth" and found the Oral Allergy Syndrome, and it all made sense! I can't find that link that had lists of foods that correlate with different pollen but I did find this one:
BUT the affecting fruit culprits are only in the RAW state. So I had a garden FULL of tomatoes that I couldn't eat fresh, I had to dehydrate them and save them for when the frost kills everything here (makes me GLAD I live somewhere where the frost and snow comes to bring me relief and new love for raw fruits I love. Melons are another one that do it. DAMNIT! Really??? No WONDER I have had all these skin issues and a seriously red face. All you guys and your "oh you are just detoxing" crap, NOPE, it's not the case with me, and I suspect that I am NOT alone. A couple years ago, I was involved in many discussions (mine and others) on how horrible my facial skin was since eating a lot of raw, and it all started in late summer when I was eating tons of tomatoes, grapes and melons AND the pollen count was high.
I really hope that this information helps some of you figure out what was up if you have had the same thing happen to you this year. I know that this forum is worldwide, so in other hemispheres where summer is still coming, your suffering will come in season if you have pollen allergies. It's a little late here in Wisconsin to stop eating the fruits that bother you, it's time to start to eat them again! I am so happy to eat tomatoes again!
I just got diagnosed with this today and it explain so much! i always thought I was crazy or overexagerating, because I have the same skin reactions...did you figure out anything for this? You said tomatoes you are eating..but cooked only?
