30 Bananas a Day!

Just moved from Melbourne to Perth staying on Cottesloe for now and working in Fremantle. One box service from an Organic Fruit shop ask me for $70 for 13kg box of bananas. In Melbourne been paying around $40 or less for last few months from Terra Madre in High St Westgarth (shipped from QLD). This is Sydney prices!

Any suggestions. Good fruit vege and wholefoods store in Fremantle/cottesloe area with non-BS prices would be good to know too.

Yep, that's Perth food prices for you! Haha

I don't live around that area, but Plant Foods Perth co-op might be useful for you. http://plantfoodsperth.org

At the moment their biodynamic bananas are $56 for 13kg - pickup is usually quite central.

Hope this helps :)
Thanks shell!

They are now mostly active on their FB page. The website is old and only for ordering plant food.

Thanks again Shell this is the go!

If you go to the canningvale markets you can get bananas, jackfruit, purple yams... I get my bananas for $2.30 a kilo. sometimes $2 if im lucky.

I might go this morning then if I can work out public transport. Do they sell much organic fruit there? Was that price you gave for bananas organic or regular? Fertilizers and sprays being so damaging to the GBR I always try to buy then organic.

Regular. There are a few shops there. Did you go through the gates?

What is GBR? Share with me your knowledge and research. :)

Yeah I paid a dollar to walk around. Only one banana vendor in the whole place and they were selling conventional for $4 a kg. didn't even bother asking for a box price seeing as I can get biodynamic for $56.

Pricing in bananas is a strange thing. You'd think it might have something to do with transport distances but it doesn't seem to. I was paying $30-40 a box in Melbourne for a couple months then went to Sydney and was quoted $70 and $90 a box at two shops in Bondi Junction. Sydney is roughly half the distance from Innisfail but the Sydney tax comes into play.

I rand Manna Wholefoods yesterday and they want over $70 a box for qld bananas that's cheaper than Sydney but double Melbourne average although I here short supply has Melb at more like $50 lately. Guy at Manna said that when WA bananas are available later this year the price will stay at $70. So it seems to be that pricing is just more competitive in Melbourne because some places price low on staples like that to bring people into their stores every week. I know that's the case with fruit peddlers. Also the bigger volume they buy every day/week the better price they get so having a bunch of people buying boxes every week ups their order significantly and therefore their buying power. Win win.

GBR == Great Barrier Reef. One of the threats to the reef (besides global warming which is on track to wipe it out entirely with Business As Usual) is nutrient runoff and turbidity from agriculture which enters rivers and is deposited on the reef. Non-organic practices (and even some organic practices which deposit manures and don't look after the soil) are responsible for this nutrient loading and soil erosion. Fertilisers and chemical sprays kill the soil life which in turn breaks the web of life holding the soil together and protects it from rainfall and erosion. Some work in QLD has been undertaken to lower potassium levels in rivers etc but the corals are still stressed. The closer you get to the mainland the more stressed they are. It's directly proportional to agricultural runoff and to port dredging activity (which is one more reason why Greg Hunt is a total dill for allowing Abbott Point dredging and spoil dumping in the water adjacent to the reef).
