When I go to work, I usually take 20+ bananas (as 4 or 5 bunches) with me in a plastic grocery bag. Inevitably, a few will be ripped off their stems, get bruised, and start browning and getting mushy. Short of buying 25 Banana Guards, does anyone have advice for protecting my precious cargo?

I know some some office people blend them and put in bottles for the work day.
Have you seen the cool bags at whole foods? They are really big and padded and would keep them cool for you, not as good as a sturdy box or cooler but better than a regular bag.
I transport about the same amount of bananas to work strapped to the back of my bike in a cardboard box (originally for mangoes). Sure they get a little beat up, but much better than in a backpack.
I have a friend who works for the national forest service who has a very sturdy and waterproof big kid's lunch box. To fit 20 bananas efficiently, he pulls them off at the stem. I've been thinking about getting one or two of those... I'll ask my friend where he got 'em.
Check out a local Herbalife distributor. They use sturdy white cardboard boxes about 10" x 4" footprint 6" high.
I use some of the old boxes for toting my bananas. They take about 10 with foam.
A handy size for all sorts of storage needs.
I'm sure you could get an unbranded copy from a cardboard box manufacturer when they saw a sample.
Or hamster boxes from the petshop-style.
Shallow tupperware.... can get 10 or so of them in there.. stacked 2 high.. maybe more..
I ended up using a big tupperware container and was able to fit 25 bananas in it comfortably. I used another one for my watermelon half, and wound up having to carry 20 pounds of fruit with one arm (my work bag is in my other hand). I'm gonna have to start working out more!
I had my tupperware open on Thursday afternoon, with only 8 bananas left, when a manager walked by, did a double-take, and just had to ask about my stash. Turns out she used to be a vegan, but became lacto-vegetarian, and now eats meat 3 times a week, due to her husband doing the cooking. I told her a little about 80/10/10, and she said she'd have to come and talk to me some more about it later on.
