30 Bananas a Day!

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else out there has a significant other that is not a vegan? I got into this lifestyle about a year and a half ago. I was a meat eater when I met my wife but once I finally educated myself on the ethical issues and health issues with eating animals I decided to stop cold turkey. I told my wife it was just an experiment and that I was going to try it for 2 weeks even though I knew it was for good. She tried it with me but after a few weeks she decided she wanted to go back to eating the way she was before. I don't want to be that person who is judgmental or someone that is pushing their beliefs on someone else but I struggle many times when I see her eating animals or buying leather products. I hope that I can be that sense of inspiration and it's my hope she will see the light and become vegan but I don't know if that will happen. I love her so much but I find myself banging my head against the wall wishing she would understand my point of view.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with this and has any advice. Thanks.

Ahh man...that's tough O_o

It must be so frustrating for you.

Has your wife seen all the appropriate documentaries?

When you know the truth it changes your life...it can be incredibly frustrating when others close to you don't 'get it'. I know for myself, I will always be vegan. It is not something that will ever change. If I were you I would give your wife some time. Hopefully she will move along to veganism. I know how much of an all-encompassing part of our lives veganism becomes. I cannot imagine having a relationship with someone who wasn't at least keen to move in that direction.

People change. You have changed for the better. Hopefully your wife will too.

Good luck Scott...let us know how you're travelling :)

Thanks! She saw part of Forks over Knives and I tried to tell her to watch Earthlings but she wont. I know deep down she has a love for animals but is not ready to deal with the truth.

Invite Gary Yourofsky over for dinner! :D

Gary openly states he'll never dine at a table with meat on it. :)

I think she would be fine with having a vegan meal with him, I think his influence meeting him in person would be fabulous! :)  I would look up his speaking schedule and/or email him and put out the invite.

That would be awesome and very intense. Gary is the man I would love to have dinner with that guy!

Me too! :)

hey Scott,

I'm in the same boat. I've been on this lifestyle going on 6 years and neither my wife or 2 boys are. I have talked to them and tried to educate through videos and books but so far they don't want to change. Basically, I just keep doing what I'm doing and hope and pray that someday they make the change. When I made my marriage vows, I pledged to love my wife for better or worse, so I just keep doing what I do and try to be as good an example as I can

You sound like a very sweet and loving husband Jim :)

Thanks Jim that's good advice. Good to hear you are staying strong!

Have been in your shoes and it's not easy. Stay true to yourself and accept that this is your journey, not hers. I think as long as she supports your choices for you, and doesn't make it difficult for you to eat vegan, it can be a great opportunity to tolerate diversity. My husband is not only a meat eater but his favourite food is KFC! As much as it's only food, it's been really difficult at times to stay connected when we choose to eat separately. I tried to lead by example but he just wasn't interested. He has suffered with chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, insomnia, addictions etc. but can't accept food as a possible cause. Unfortunately for us, we are just too different in too many ways so due to other non food related issues, we've recently separated. I can say that in some ways it's a huge relief to now be free to live my life in alignment with my values.

How people don't make that good food = health / bad food = sickness, connection is beyond me O_o
