So ive been eating a lot of mangoes lately and I noticed Im starting to break out around my lips. Normally I get small pimples around my lips like this when I am stressed out, and this month has definitely been stressful for me, but I noticed that they are kind of itchy too. So I was wondering if im getting an allergic reaction to mangoes or if anyone else has had this problem?
Ive also been eating a lot of tomatoes lately too, so maybe the combination of the two?
Hey- I have this problem too, and from what I've learned, you should be careful. Probably (though correct me if you're not doing this) you're having an allergic reaction to the skin of the mango, not the fruit itself. Mango belongs to the same family as poison ivy, so if you're already sensitive to urushiol (the chemical in poison ivy and in mango SKIN), then you're going to get contact dermatitis from coming into contact with the skin. My doctor told me to be aware of this, since if it gets in your throat, it could be bad news.
My advice is to wash and cut the mangos with gloves on, removing all the skin instead of slicing it and them just eating around it, like a watermelon or something.
Best of luck!
Thanks for the suggestions! I am very sensitive to poison ivy so that makes sense.
How come my hands aren't reacting to the skin of the mango though? Its just around my mouth.
I can think of two reasons:
1. You probably wash your hands after cutting mango, or you'd be all sticky
2. The skin around your mouth is much more sensitive than your palms and finger pads, which are in contact all day long with other objects.
Thanks again! Makes a lot of sense now.
I guess I just need to wait it out and try not to touch or itch it at all.
