30 Bananas a Day!

Any ideas for what to do with fruit skins? I live in a flat and don;t want to throw them in the bin. However, I don't have a garden or anything. If you compost in your flat....

I assume you want to do something witht he compost once you got some finished? I'd find a cool dark place to put a 5 gallon bucket and poke some holes in it for ventilation and a lid etc.. set it on a piece of plastic or what not so if anything leaks you dont get it on your floor dump the stuff in there and give it a turn like flip it over a few times every now and then eventually you'll get some really good compost I'd then take that compost and sprout some stuff in it etc..

of course eating liek this a 5 gallon bucket is not going to be large enough I have piles and piles that go into my garden each year and sadly out of sheer lazyness i do still just toss many banana peals etc.. IE it mightbe really cold out and i'm too lazy to put on my layers and run the stuff out to a pile etc..

I have the same problem. Unfortunately I would be kicked out of my complex if I did. No "trash" allowed on my porch :(

Do you have a balcony?

Maybe a system from here will work:  composters

The key is to find a system that doesn't leak if it will be indoors or on a balcony.  Most of the tumblers leak.

Put signs up for free compost.  Maybe there's a community garden or something that needs your peels.  Find a park near your house to get rid of it in.  You can peel back the sod, dig a hole, dump your scraps, replace sod.  If there are flower beds, you can skip the sod parts.

If you're eating enough fruit there's no way you can compost all of it inside... unless you're reeaally dedicated to it and don't mind giving up most of your space to it.

I agree, I do not think it is realistic to compost it yourself indoors, composting takes a lot of time and effort.  There are probably people near you that would love to have your compost.  I would look for a local garden club to contact.  Good for you, you are doing the right thing! :)

yeah I wasn't too sure about that myself. Think there's a community garden down the road I'll check out. Do allotments need compost? I've always lived in a city and know nothing about gardening lol

everyone needs compost! :D

Indeed, gardeners can never have enough compost! I would suggest delivering your fruit and veggie scraps to a local community garden twice a week. They are certain to have a compost bay and probably even a worm farm. You might even get some fresh veggies every now and as an exchange!

What I do is when I leave for work each day is i bring a bag of my scraps and just dump them anywhere or throw it out my window as I'm driving. I know it would be more beneficial for something to actually grow in the compost but I figure its better than the garbage anyways. My city spends $80 million a year on picking up peoples compost yet they only gather $40 million worth and they don't have anywhere for people to drop it off themselves.

You live in a progressive city!  What do they do with the compost?
