30 Bananas a Day!

I often try to purchase organic grocery items whenever I can. However, I have noticed a recent increase in "organic" products in mainstream grocery stores. At first I was thrilled, but sometimes I wonder if it is just a label (and increased price), and nothing more. Is any one else suspicious that these organic labels are not to be trusted?

Sometimes the organic food that I buy has a noticeable taste difference in comparison to its inorganic counterpart, but sometimes it tastes exactly the same, or even worse. I'm not sure, maybe I'm just paranoid. :-P

I'd love to hear your opinions!

organic is allowed up to 30% GMO contamination, it's allowed to be sprayed with all kinds of chemicals after picking but it's still much better than non-organic in terms of nutrition and less heavy metals and chemicals than non-organic.  taste is also a good way to tell if it's good, for example fair trade bananas are much higher quality and more sustainably grown than any organic.  also research the company you buy from and buy from small ethical companies as well as from farmers you know and of course grow as much of your own food as possible.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was afraid of. The chart definitely supports the organic path though! I am somewhat afraid that the chart is not up to date though. I would be interested in seeing a more updated chart.

I always try to buy from local farmers and grow my own food, however it is somewhat difficult in the winter. I guess I will just have to live with the fact that almost all purchasable food will contain GMO contamination.

You do not have to eat GMOs, buy stuff that has not been genetically modified.  Buy from companies that care about these issues and use products grown by farmers who care.  Here is a good list of who not to buy from: http://www.simplifymyfoodchoices.com/organic-natural-brands.html

You can also buy from companies that are non-gmo verified, they are allowed up to 0.9% GMO which is much better than 30%! > Revised Seal copy

Another important point in buying non-GMO certified is you put pressure on other companies to sign on to the project and get GMO's off their land.

A good resource to find out exactly what is on your food: http://www.whatsonmyfood.org/

As for nutritional content, you can tell by taste but here is an article on recent studies:

GMO and food activist Vandana Shiva said that one person can easily know every plant in a one acre garden and thereby destroy any GMO crop that turns up.  So the message is that we all need to be growing our own foods. A hundred years ago, most everyone had a garden, we need to get back to that!

This info is 20 years old. Any new and up to date research you have on hand?

Thanks for the question, this issue is close to my heart!
