We live in a not so tropical state (PA) and when we stumbled across a wholesale distributor of fruits, we loaded up on tons of water coconuts at a good price. They are all different shapes and sizes, some brown some green. Upon opening several of different colors, the flavor of the water is somewhat sour and not sweet like I've had in the past. It does not taste like it has gone bad, just not sweet. Is there such a thing as immature/unripe coconuts and could it be unhealthy to consume this coconut water kind of like consuming unripe fruit and causing health issues? I googled but did not find any info on the water itself, just mature vs immature coconuts. Thanks in advance for any insight.
We get fresh nuts from the beach regularly...some green, some mature, depending on what we want to do with them. We drink the young nuts and eat the 'jelly' inside (immature meat) and use mature ones to make 'milk'. They are always sweet...and that's what concerns me about yours. Some are definitely sweeter than others and some are even fizzy but are never not sweet. A bad one is very offensive and there is no not recognising it as rotten. I wonder if you are buying irradiated nuts as I have tried the ones from supermarkets from time to time and they taste really strange and gross to me...I suspect this is from the radiation process. Would never bother buying one from a shop ever again.
You can't really tell how mature they are until you chop them open...colour varies with variety not maturity.
I would say if they don't taste good and sweet then they are not good and prolly not good for you. :'(
