30 Bananas a Day!

I can never find them ripe! I have a market behind my house that sells all conventional fruits and veggies. They've been giving me a discount on ripe bananas. Should I be buying organic?

I eat ripe bananas.  I think they taste better.  There is a documentary called "Bananas" about how conventional banana farming harms the health of its workers.  I have heard that organic banana farming is just the conventional farms planting trees that they don't spray or use conventional fertilizer on, surrounded by their conventional fields.  I don't know if that is true.

Depends on what company you buy from.  The co-op in my town sells GROW Bananas from Organics Unlimited.  From what I have read on the company and the GROW program it sounds quite good.  I can't believe everything I read but I think there is a difference between buying "organic" Dole bananas and buying bananas from a company that is dedicated to growing organic produce, or from an organic farm.

I buy the GROW bananas when I can get them.  I think they taste better, and ripen better, than the Dole organics.  I've thought about just not ever buying the Dole, even organic, because  don't want to support that company, but I'm afraid of running out of bananas to eat.  maybe I just need to find more sources.  I think the store just buys whatever is the best price for them.

I don't have access to DOLE bananas.  I can get Chiquita or Dole only.

Doh... I meant to say, "I eat ORGANIC bananas."  LOL!

I eat ripe organic foods only if I can help it. They definitely taste better. Each banana is unique, even from the same bunch! What I want to know is how many kilos of bananas do you buy at any one time and how frequently do you order them so that they're ripe for when you need them? I'm still trying to work it out for my own needs but would really appreciate an incite into what others find is enough and works for them...?? Thanks.

I can usually taste a big difference, so I buy mostly organic bananas. But if i didn't have access to good organic bananas, I wouldn't sweat it. If I see good deals on conventional, I buy them up too.

Maybe I can buy a ton of organic bananas and let them ripen while I eat my conventional. Organic isn't much more just really hard to find for some reason. I hate buying them from Whole Foods- complete rip.

ditto!!!

That sounds like a good plan.  Do you have distribution center near you?

I've only seen ripe bananas for sale once at any store I've been to in the last year.  I certainly wouldn't want to depend on that.  yeah, they were discounted, but I get the same price or better buying them by the box.  I always buy organic now, because the price isn't much different for me.  I get a 40 lb box of organic for about $29 right now (it goes up or down a couple of bucks during the year) and conventional for about $22.  I wouldn't worry to much about eating conventional though, it's better than not eating bananas at all!  I usually have two 40 lbs boxes going at a time.  I buy another one when the first one is close to ripe.  How long till it's ripe depends on the time of year for me.  I noticed it takes longer in the winter, because it's cooler in my house then.  about a week and a half right now.  It's always an estimate (how many the kids will eat, how fast they ripen) so I always buy more than I think I'll need rather than less.  Like SlimGinn said, you can always freeze the extra, and use them for smoothies.  I've run out of ripe bananas enough times, that I always do it this way now.

Another tip; if they're super green, and you think you're going to run out, leave them in the box, and wrap the whole thing in plastic, or put the whole box in a plastic bag.   they'll ripen faster.  then when they're close to ripe, I take them out of the box and spread them out on the counter to slow it down, so I can eat them all before they go too far.
