30 Bananas a Day!

Hey everybody,

I was up until 3:30 A.M. socializing last night :(. For some reason, I can't seem to get myself to get to bed consistently at a decent hour. Sometimes I can do it for a few days, or a week, but never longer than that. I realize that sleep is essential for my health. I realize that I feel like crap every time I stay up late. But for some reason, I still don't go to bed on time.  My ideal is to sleep around 9:00 P.M. and wake up at around 7:00 A.M. every day, but for some reason, it's hard to make myself stop whatever I'm doing at night (socializing, practicing guitar, reading health info. on the internet, etc.) and just go to sleep.

I think part of the problem is that my priorities change throughout the day. When I first wake up tired in the morning, sleep seems really important--so I plan on doing everything I can to go to bed early the following night. But by nighttime, my priorities change, and whatever else I'm doing seems more important than sleep--so I go to bed late, and the cycle starts over again the next day. I wish I could get rid of these inconsistencies in my thinking.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone here been able to consistently go to bed at an early hour (9:00 AM or earlier)? If so, what are your "secrets" and what's your routine like before going to bed?

Best,

Danny

Hey Danny, I used to have the same problem, in that I would always be having dinner late at night and watching youtube videos until 11-12. This was mainly because I lounged around in the morning until I actually had to do something (class, errands, etc.). So, i figured out that if I get everything that I need to get done in a day in the morning/early afternoon, then I'd have a lot of time left over to do what I want. I ended up having an early dinner, I watched all the youtube I wanted to, and the time each day was, at the very latest, 10pm. So maybe an elucidation and reorganization of your daily priorities will help both your efficiency relating to the way you complete you tasks, and the amount of sleep you can get in regards to waking up bright and fresh for the next day.

And stay there without your cell phone.

Focus on waking up at a certain time every single day, no matter what! Set your alarm!

For example I focused on waking up at 7:30am, so even if I had a late night, I would have to wake up at 7:30am. I still had a late night here and there, but when I started to realize the consequences, (that I would be absolutely knackered the next day) they gradually stopped. Naturally your body will start getting very sleepy at about 9:30 -10:00pm.

Exercising straight away may also help wake you up. I used to go for a good long cycle. Its great when no one is around, 'tis quite peaceful.

Hope this helped, pal :)

I have to turn off my toys and gadgets early. Otherwise, I will be up all night. It is so worth it to get the sleep you need.

What always works for me is a good book. It calms me down and gets me ready to sleep. My sleep is more refresing after a book compared to watching a movie or youtube. But you are absolutely right. It is a matter of preferencies

hi danny, i tried this with great success: start turning off the lights around 9. not all the lights, but most sources of light. have only the least amount of light possible around you starting at about 9, and forget about the computer, that's just way too exciting for your eyes if you want to be feeling sleepy. your body will naturally begin to produce melatonin as the lights dim. BUT: wait until midnight or so to start turning off lights, and you've already lost your opportunity to use the flow your body's natural cycle to get to sleep when the sun has gone down.

hope that you can use that info to find yourself on the path you want!

btw i got this advice from liferegenerator on youtube. check him out if you haven't already!

easy - wake up early (early is between 5am and 6 am) by the time the suns going down your going to want to tuck in to bed 8-9 pm with no dramas.

Buy a good watch.

Take Care,

Hi Danny. Yes I have the same issue. As a mom I love my alone time at night and I also work second shift 3 nights per week so I'm wound up at night. It's really important piece of the puzzle so I'm working hard at it. I get a second wind at about 9 pm and start to get energized so what is working for me is going to bed and reading before that happens. Sometimes I'm tired right away, other times I read for quite awhile but at least I'm at rest and I am sleeping much better all through the night.

If your problem is dragging yourself away from the computer I found this program helpful

Thank you everyone for your comments! I went to bed at 9:30 last night!
