So I've had just about enough of the corporate world. I'm sick of being underpaid and overworked. I want to move to Costa Rica, I want to be free, I want untouched land.
For those that have done it - dropped everything and moved countries - how did you do it?
I can't leave yet. I have debts to pay off and savings to build before I can go to CR (I'd go for 3-6 months to scope out different areas). But I'm very interested in connecting with people who have done it just to get some general advice (doesn't have to be CR-specific).
What are some things I need to think about that I probably haven't?
My life is pretty simple. I live with a roommate, so I don't have a lease to worry about breaking. I don't own a car, I don't have kids, I'm single and free. The only thing stopping me is my stupid job only pays me enough to break even, not save. I've started applying to other jobs now. In the meantime, I have 1600$ to pay off my on credit card and then saving enough for the flight/hotel (or rental house), spending money, whatever else I need while traveling.
So! Has anyone left it all behind? How did you do it? How do you feel about it?
I'm about to do it!:)
I'm in the process of buying 5 acres in south Florida.
You must save at least $20-30000 so you can buy the land and all the other stuff.
You must visit the area and do a lot of research. It's a bit tougher if you're moving to a different country because of the visa/immigration issues, language barrier, etc.
It's doable but you have to commit and start taking action TODAY!:)
where in FL? I'm from there and I adore alligator alley...are you anywhere near that?
good luck to both of you :-)
lol very close to Alligator Alley.. Golden Gate Estates in Naples!
Thank you, I'm very excited!!!:)
I've lived in Florida for 99% of my life (I was born in NY, but we moved when I was 3 months old). It's great; and I love it even more now that I'm HCRV.
I still plan on moving out of US mainland though, into Hawaii, South America, South Africa, of Australia, when I'm older (I'm 15.)
So, [pre] Welcome to our state!!
Can't wait to be there!!!:)
Man, I should've just stayed in Miami. Pesky divorces...
go here and sign up for Simon Black's free newsletter. He is a world traveler and his newsletter will help give you some perspective. (some will be relevant to your desires, some won't) Not saying I agree with everything he says, however he knows what he is talking about most of the time. He just purchased a 1000 acre ranch in Santiago, Chile and is looking for like minded people to buy in. And what he means by like minded is being able to produce and provide for yourself, not being reliant on corporate whores for all our daily essentials. http://www.sovereignman.com/simon-black/
Signed up - the guy seems a little crazy, but hey, I'll give it a shot :P
We are in the process of saving money to move to CR. im aiming to have 25-30k by the end of the year and the initial plan is to go backpack around and volunteer at a few communities. There are alot of places with work exchange programs but really i want to see where and who resonates with us. i hear the San isidro area has the best fruit, and dominical beach is nearby, so thats our first destination. I would love to buy some land and create a sustainable fruit forest to grow a community around.
Hit me up if everything goes through. Would definitely be interested in the community :)
VERY helpful Jon - thank you very much!
