30 Bananas a Day!

How do Freelee and DR and everyone else who eats cooked food or does "Raw 'til Four" do it? My mom lost her job, so we're in kind of a budget crunch, and so I decided to try bringing some cooked starches into my diet for dinner sometimes (can't stand to eat bananas ALL the time). And uck, it feels so gross! This stuff doesn't even taste good, and I feel heavy and sick and hot and uncomfortable. Any tips or ideas?

Thanks,

Shannon

Hi, there are plenty of ways to eat good for cheap. Plain old rice with with veg is good. Same with potatoes and flavourings. Pasta is another way. If your experiencing cold weather i would recommend a stew of vegetables.

A quick recipe for stewed veg would be :

2 carrots peeled and chopped

2 parsnips peeled and chopped

1/2 a swede peeled and chopped

A red bell pepper in large slices

2 red onions sliced

4 cloves of garlic

1 large leek sliced ( if you cant eat onions or garlic replace them with more leeks )

A good handful of pearl barley.

A good amount of black pepper

2 vegan stock cubes ( or vegetarian ) with 0.5 litre of water

Stew all these down for about 2 hours

Then add shredded cabbage and enough bitesize pieces of potato for your family and stew for at least another hour.

By doing a stew you keep all the water in the same pot therefore you dont leech vitamins and minerals they become part of the gravy.

That doesn't help, sorry--I feel like, if baked potatoes make me feel so sick, then a soup with garlic and potatoes and onions and everything will be worse. :( I think maybe I'll just try the whole banana thing instead. Problem solved.

The soup thing wasn't the only thing i mentioned.

So i'll put it this way banannas and dates till lunch. Oranges or pears or apples + dates for lunch then pasta or rice or potatoes for dinner.

gl tho it seems your allergic to food.

Andy, I like your stew, but what's a swede?

My favorite LFV cooked food meals:

- pumpkin mash (cooked in the oven), steamed paksoi and rice

- red kidney beans with rice and steamed leafy greens

- kale & potato mash

- baked (orange) sweet potatoes with a mixed salad

- pasta with of the rack tomato sauce (the sauce has about 3.5% calories coming from fat has some salt in it)

These options don't have any oil or MSG added to them, and require just a few spices to make them taste good.

Some good ideas so far shared here, but in the future please keep all cooked talk in our group designed exclusively for that purpose:

SB, as you're finding out cooked carbs are fine for surviving, but are lacking when it comes to thriving.

I agree that only nans can get a bit blagh, so try to mix it up a bit.  For instance, spiking a nan smoothie with just a bit of berries or grapes can improve the flavor immensely without breaking the bank.  Look around for plantains, often at hispanic or asian stores.  they're often a reasonable price and taste better blended than nans IMO.  Also, at those same type of markets, they often have available discounted "over-ripe" produce.  Build your fresh food network by getting to know as many produce managers and local growers as possible.  Who knows what deals you might find?
