30 Bananas a Day!

In my english class, I'm giving a "speech to impact social change" next week.  The only requirement for the speech was that it was something that I cared about, so I of course chose veganism!  Because it's a three-minute speech, I decided to choose just one orb of the wide world of amazing reasons to go vegan: environmental impact/water consumption and veganism's effect on world hunger, rather than morality and health, since they are very complex subjects.

I was wondering if anybody could help!  In SOOO many videos, I have heard members of the 30bad community talk about the environmental impact/world hunger impact of veganism, but I can't seem to find the specific studies, which I need to cite.  So if anybody could link some articles/studies, or even books/passages pertaining to this subject, I would be VERY appreciative!

Thanks, have a fruity day :)

Not sure if this will help because it's just quick facts, but I had this bookmarked: Vegan Quick Facts . You could google some of those facts to try and find articles based around them. Good luck!

I don't think this is amazing help either, but more water is used to feed a cow than the amount of water it takes to grow a pound of rice to feed(a certain #) of children...something like that. It's a good statistic though I just can't remember it specifically. :) hahaha. Look it up!

I would go for success stories of people who healed on vegan diets OR some myth busting. Must be very interesting. Enjoy

There's a lot of info online about the effects of raising cattle on the rain forest - if you went this route you'd find plenty of resources.  The images and videos online are enough to make one sick I do have to say.

This article: http://www.calpeacepower.org/0302/meal.htm  talks about the amount of water needed to raise 1 pound of beef (2500 gallons) compared to 1 pound of wheat (25 gallons).

Researchers at Michigan State University found that 2,500 gallons are needed to grow a pound of flesh, which would mean the same steer actually necessitates 2.5 million gallons of water in its lifetime.2 Contrarily, only 25 gallons of water are required to produce one pound of wheat, 1 percent as much water as is needed for beef.

Note that the cow doesn't use all that water to drink, it includes the water needed to produce the grain to feed the cow during its lifetime.

Here is another link that has a lot of great interesting statistics from John Robbins' book, A Diet for a New Americahttps://web.duke.edu/planv/realities.html

Show pictures. ;)

thanks everyone for your help! the speech was a total success.  I talked a bit about health, water consumption, water pollution, and world hunger and linked it all together with humor and a casual tone.  My teacher said it was great, and everyone in the room said it was interesting and informative!

Congratulations!  It wouldn't surprise me one bit if at least one of your classmates turns vegan in the future and your speech will have had some part to play in it.   You're sowing the seeds today so that they will be aware of it tomorrow.
