30 Bananas a Day!

I had a big change of heart and have decided not to lead at a summercamp in the US like I had planned. Instead, I want to spend about three weeks in Hawaii *before and after i will spend a week in LA doing research stuff at UCLA*.
SO who has been to Hawaii? Who lives there? Who can recommend realllllly cheap places to stay? I have contacted cinderland eco villiage but so far haven't heard back. Where are the best places for fruit, beach, and not much else?!
Any advice would be appreciated

bailin out on us over on the east coast, huh jessica? lol

well sorry to hear we won't be meetin up as discussed, but can't really say that i blame ya.. i hear hawaii is beautiful

i recommend signing up with WWOOF.. it's $20 US to join, but they'll send you a directory with all of the farms who offer free housing for volunteers.. flip through the farms and i'm sure you'll find something that calls out to ya

best of luck
I went to the Big Island, which was really pretty, I found Honolulu very touristy and crowded and didn't enjoy it there at all. I think the smaller islands would be nicer
Hey Jessica...

Long time reader...first time discussion:)

Been to Hawaii twice now and would try and get back there every year but the diminished aussie dollar, poor conversion and world economy have your paying double for everything and overall the touristy places like Waikiki beach can be pricey.
If you want to just relax and kick back on quiet more secluded beached than the best island to go is definately Maui...not sure or your current situation but its really something more for couples and families then there is the big island which is apparently like the dark side of the moon on one side of the island. There is cheap very basic accomodation there and if you are into surfing and its the home of the giant monster wave called 'jaws' you see on crazy surf movies where guys get towed into the mountain of water....
But...If you want to go out, see some interesting sites, drink, drink & drink some more i can highly recommend anywhere on the island of Ohahu..mainly Kalakau Avenue, Waikiki Beach is the place to be...Everything is close or within a few (miles:) you can hire a vespa to scoot around for $20 a day. There are great bars all over and even better ones like Dukes right on the beach....there are great learn to surf shacks (if you need) cheap eaterys on the other side of the street, really good clothes to shop for up / down the main avenue, you can even shoot an m16 at the gun range:). From here you can go up to the north shore to watch the massive pipeline waves (at certain times of the year) on the way stop off at Hanauma bay for a snorkle or swim with the dolphins ...the list goes on!
The best part is the people you will meet, Canadians are great, Americans, Europeans its a mix of different cultures and diverse asian/polynesian influence thats fantastic, made loads of pals there and still stay in contact with them... By the way L.A is apparently a majour shit hole my friend tell me:)

Hope this is helpfull...

look up stefan reeves.

Hey durianrider, have you done worktrade for Stefan Reeves? I'm in Hana and I went to his place in Kipahulu on Maui and he wasnt there. Met his mother very nice lady. Looks like an amazing property, his mother said he is all booked up for worktraders at the moment one on the way and 4 on waiting list. I hear from the locals around at the nearby farms that is is a raw vegan and works all day gets up with the sun and goes to bed with the sun just the kinda thing i'm looking for. Too bad hes all booked up!
That is where I am going to visit when I go to Maui
met him over here in feb. at a permaculture convergance, he is the real deal that s for sure, amazing gardens one can create when eating fresh food
Awesome I can't wait to get to Hawaii, one of these days :)
stephen and i stayed here when we went to oahu: http://www.backpackers-hawaii.com/index.html.

it was pretty cheap and just a short busride to some fruit stands down the road. right across from the beach too!

I've stayed in a lot of places for free, and usually people are willing to show you the area as well, or at least recommend the must sees. Great website for travelers!
