Being in college is introducing me to a lot of new people. While some people are very accepting of the answer, "I'm vegan because I want to be." or "I'm doing it for me," other people shun the idea. It's not like I am pushing my ideas on them in anyway, they ask ME about my lifestyle, yet they get all defensive about their SAD. I don't want to go into depth about why vegans don't wither away.... & not to mention there are vegan bodybuilders when these people clearly can't respect facts. Does any one else encounter these closed minded people often? If so, I need your advice!
Well, I don't know what to say. You are on the right path. You will be attacked, it's part of this culture. I just try to avoid bigots, I have wasted enough energy defending myself already. You cannot win an argument when people don't play by the rules. Honestly, many people are stuck in a middle school type of mindset. I have been teased like a 7th grader by people much older than me. If people want to be ignorant buffoons, it is their right.
But really, I have no idea what I would do in your circumstance. I am sure Topper's and Chipotle are a big thing around there. I used to drink a lot of gin just so I could relate to society on some level.
To the ones who seem shunning to the idea, you don't have to say anything, just put on a particulate respirator whenever you're around them & they'll think that they smell bad to you, and get too frustrated to bother you.
Joking, joking... what Windlord said
But really, if it's obvious that all they want to do is hate on you, it may help to find something that's energy efficient, that serves as a repercussion every time they do bother you (so that they know they'll end up getting annoyed if they try to annoy you).
I would say " I guess my problem is I'm trying to educate someone who doesn't care to learn." You said that. How would you feel if I insisted on teaching you all about over 100 elements in the periodic table? Maybe that is how they feel! Why not try learning about them first. If they want to be closed minded, then respect that.

everyone should know the entire periodic table! forcing them to learn it is not mendeleeving in their lives at all! that you would write something like this, chuck ... well, i find it truly chemystifying!
greetings dani! and welcome to 30bad!
people get defensive about SAD because they know it's not good.
it bothers them even more because they know what you are doing is good.
they really aren't closed-minded at all ... they are merely forcing themselves to be in denial through ludicrous rationalizations.
in any case, we don't need to worry about their shortcomings, state-of-mind, personal choices and other such utter foolishness.
our job isn't to convince them ... that's their job. our job is only to provide information.
so, enjoy this:
you may find some of those 'rationalizations' properly coming from the 'other side'. ;)
