30 Bananas a Day!

Since going raw, I find myself at the grocery store a lot.  I'm still gauging how much I actually need each week.  I might actually be paying too much since I'm not buying most of it in bulk.  I'm just curious, for those that eat 2500+ calories a day, how often do you go to the grocery store or wherever you buy your fruits/veggies from?  What are you getting and what are the quantities of what you're getting?  How long does it last in your house?

I'm taking in anywhere from 3,500 to 4,000 calories per day currently.  Trips are usually every 3 to 4 days.  Bringing home as many of the discounted ripe bananas as possible.  usually about 60, I also always pick up 3 or 4 bags(5lbs) of clementines and as much watermelon as I can fit in my cart.  I get 6 heads of romaine hearts every trip as well.  I'm usually getting in and out with less than $40.  I buy dates in bulk so they make up for any other calories throughout the week.

This is good info, thanks.  Is this organic?  Also, does your store usually have the discounted ripe bananas out or do you have to ask for them?

Im doing the clementines and the romaine organic right now.  The places around me in Ohio have very strange tasting organic bananas.  I'm lucky to have a few giant eagle stores I can swing by to check for discounted ripe bananas, they always have some out.

great questions! it can sometimes be costly, depending on availability/ location etc. and on days when you're less active and don't end up eating all the food you bought; it can feel like a waste and lead to frustration. Frequent trips can be annoying too :)

I like to go every second day and don't buy in bulk. This system may not suit your lifestyle however.

I know my fruit market will be shelving discounted produce at the end of the day so I take what's available and it generally lasts a couple of days. I usually collect about ten mangoes, a few decent sized bananas, ten or so zucchini, a few capsicums, 500g of salad mix, maybe 1kg of tomatoes, and then I fill my basket with what ever else I feel like at the time - kiwis, nectarines, strawberries, pumpkin etc.

This amount of food, on average costs about $10 each time [although, of course that fluctuates in correlation with how much fruit has been discounted on a certain day; other times they offer me the rest of the produce without charge as they know they won't be able to sell it anyhow.

I have a sneaking suspicion this may have been a self indulgent message and not particularly helpful to you. I really enjoy my routine of sunny walks to the fruit market, the bi daily trips make me happy, and i'm really lucky to have such a great inexpensive store near by. but you may find it more convenient to buy in bulk, i hope someone else offer you some more practical advice!

Anna.

Wow, 99 cents for strawberries.  No, this is helpful.  Thanks.  It seems I really have to do some research in my area and talk to store managers to see what kind of deals I can work out.
