30 Bananas a Day!

Hi, I was wondering, what is a good source of Selenium?  I know Brazil nuts are a good source, but there are no Brazil nuts in my country.  So do you know of any other good sources?

Also is it important to meet the RDI requirement? What does your body need Selenium for?  And is it worth considering taking a Selenium supplement? Do any of you take Selenium supplements?

Thanks!

no...You can buy brazil nuts online.

Apparently, we need some trace amounts of Selenium, but it is lethal in large doses.  The RDA for it may be set too high.

Most other foods high in selenium are animal foods, but sunflower seeds also contain appreciable quantities of selenium (79μg of selenium per 100 gram serving according to http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/foods-high-in-selenium.php). Selenium is needed for proper thyroid function and might also play a role in cardiovascular health (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10963212).

one Brazil nut a day and the doctor stays away

I don't think so.  I live in Turkey, and I haven't found on any Turkish website before.  I'm also not sure if I can import them because they're food.  Which is why I'm looking for alternatives.

Can you get raw sunflower seeds?  They are high in selenium.  An ounce of sunflower seeds has 15 mcg of selenium while 1.25 ounces of Brazil nuts has 679.3 mcg.  The USDA DRI for selenium is 55 mcg.  The Japanese, which I find more reliable is 25-35.  Therefore, I believe that you can conceivably meet your dietary needs with an ounce or two of sunflower seeds daily along with adequate caloric intake of other fruits and veggies.  Though you might want to check out importing Brazil nuts.  I just find it hard to believe that we are dependent on a nut that only exist in a small region of the globe.  Sunflower seeds on the other hand grow almost every where.   If Brazil nuts are a South American tree and we evolved out of Africa, there must be other sources that meet our needs.  You might want to check out :  http://nutritiondata.self.com/tools/nutrient-search
