30 Bananas a Day!

Are there many fruitarian communes out there? If so is there some kind of a list or collaboration of all of them? I think that many of the 30 BaD members are looking for this sort of lifestyle.

There is the 80-10-10 community in Hawaii, formerly known as Pangea (I think).  I can't find a website for them, but Chris Kendall recently did some vids while visiting there.  There was another 811 community in Hawaii called Moana 'ula, but I'm not sure if they are still there.  Another group is trying to form another 811 community in Hawaii called "Terrafruta".

There is also La Joya del Sol (http://www.vivalaraw.org/) in Costa Rica.  Apparently someone is trying to form one in Kenya (http://mangodurian.blogspot.com/2011/05/fruitarian-community.html) and there is a group on facebook trying to coordinate one somewhere (https://www.facebook.com/groups/FruitarianFruitopia/?ref=ts&fre...).

My husband and I are looking into this option for our family also.  We plan on doing an internship at La Joya del Sol sometime early next year.

this info is precious! thanks a lot!... have you heard of anything around asia?

We are working to get more interested parties out here to Big Island Hawaii (Puna area) to purchase some land and coordinate another 811 community. As of now there is Moana Ula (name is changing soon) that Chris Kendall visited recently. Its a great property, but there are more opportunities for purchasing land out here and coordinating a larger community, in addition.

We have started a discussion on facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/FruitarianFruitopia/

ATM there is 100 acre property that is going to be purchased and subdivided soon. There are several fruit heads involved in that land deal, including Megan McDonnell and a few others (I live right next to the 100 acre lot). So things are happening! I think the most important thing as far as connecting and getting involved is deciding what part of the tropics you want to be in, as there are places cropping up in Costa Rica and other parts of the world.

We are here, waiting, ready to help :) . We have several fruit heads working hard to create mucho nursery stock of fruit trees for planting when the time comes ;)

Hi, I just sent u a friend request but missed the personal message part which is why I sent the request!

Anyway my boyfriend & I are in the Pahoa area right now and looking into fruity land opportunities as well, so we'd love to meet up sometime and find out what's going on. We are here till the end of the month, with more free time starting next week. I also just joined the group on Facebook.

Aloha!

What an awesome discusion, this will be great to create a future referance also.
it would be cool to get this info documented on a platform like this, also would be cool to get a referance for food forest locations known around the world.
I am excited to to see what comes of this post for sure.
Peace n love Ryan

Thanks for the input everyone! I wish there was a way for me to help, but im still in high school. So a big question that I have is, are these communities intended for long time living or are they more of a place to visit for a few months at most, and also I was wondering if to contribute to these new communities you have to have lots of money. Once i'm done with high school i'm going to give WWOOFing a shot so that I can get in the know. I live in Virginia so the tropics are very foreign to me. Has anyone had any good long term experience WWOOFing?

and also I was wondering if to contribute to these new communities you have to have lots of money

Generally, yes, resources have been violently denied to most people and so everyone is desperate to get people involved in their project who have monetary wealth to contribute. Its a shame as this won't bring you the best of folk if its a high priority/ mandatory requirement. I was just thinking about this earlier, I've looked into these communities and many of them are very expensive to join as a member, less expensive for work/internships but still can be pretty expensive. I can tell you right now that a month at one of the 811's in Hawaii is $1000, meaning you pay a grand a month for an internship where you work.

Better start saving your pennies, I recommend laying off any expensive herbs one might partake in, when you realize how much money you've spent on it, its a real bummer.

Thanks so much for asking the question and to the people who have given such exciting responses!  It's awesome to have these places on my radar!  Yay :D  I'm in the process of pulling together a small intentional community in California but not sure yet where on the spectrum between vegetarian and 100% raw vegan it'll be (I personally am low-fat high-raw vegan).  Got the chance recently to live in a fruitarian co-op in Austin, Texas (it's ending next month) and it was really fun and supportive to have a 100% fruithead house, unplugged oven and everything!  I recommend people try that to see how it feels.
