30 Bananas a Day!

I would say I am a champ at picking out some really tasty frozen durians, which is kind of sad because it means I have eaten A LOT of them and we all know that they may not be the greatest ones to be eating (even when they taste like vanilla pudding)

At the market today they had fresh durians! I definitely found one ripe one, it was soft and easily opened down its seem. The catch was they were $5lb, which to me is totally reasonable, but you had to buy a case which was around 35lbs. The other durians that came in the case were still hard slightly more green and seemed less ripe.

My question is will they ripen well after being picked or are they just going to sit on my counter and rot? Also, how do you tell when a fresh durian is perfect?

yes they'll ripen.. keep in a warm, humid area (which shouldn't be hard considering our weather this summer).. green is fine, if you see pics of fresh durian overseas they are typically pretty green on the outside, even when ripe.. sometimes the seems will start to pop open when it ripens, but you can also tell by the aroma as it starts to smell sweet and ready

it's hard to pick a perfect one.. the thais (and other SE asians) know by the sound it makes when tapping it with a felted stick.. i haven't gotten this skill down yet.. i typically judge by shape, looking for a bloated-looking durian with spikes that are broad and nicely-spaced.. i also check the scent to see if it smells nice (and make sure it doesn't smell off)

this is all going by buying fresh durian in its home countries.. not sure if it all will apply the same with imported stuff.. i didn't know that they imported it any other way than frozen (besides the genefit durian that's de-shelled).. lucky you puala :-)
awww... we just got fresh durian the other day, too, and when we opened it it wasn't quite ripe. wish we had known it would have ripened more on the counter.
yea you should really never have to resort to cutting it.. i learned this the hard way in thailand and still have a scar on my forearm to show for it lol

that's another good indication of ripeness.. you should always be able to open a durian with just your hands
