30 Bananas a Day!

Hi Everyone,

My boyfriend was diagnosed with a fatty liver the other month and now he is having abdominal pains which are sometimes extreme particularly after he eats.  He has been vegan for about 7 months but HCLF for about 2 months. He only started having the pain in January after returned from a 6 week holiday in Europe where he ate out in vegan restaurants every day and so did not stick to any HCLF rules.

Before being vegan he was a big meat and dairy eater and consumed junk food on a regular basis eg. Chips, chocolate, subway, hungry jacks, fantastic noodle cups etc.  Despite all this he never puts on any weight and is quite lean naturally without any effort.

He predominantly eats cooked vegan foods for lunch and dinner all Low fat and high carb.

He got an ultra sound and a blood test done (the ultra sound showed a fatty liver). He went to see a vegan doctor who prescribed him some pills to reduce the acidity within his stomach. He didn’t take them for about a month hoping the pain would go away but it didn’t so he started taking them, but they haven’t helped.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know the reason for the cause of the fatty liver and how to treat it?

Thanks for anyone’s help in advance!

What 'acidity within his stomach'? I would ask this doctor what are these pills exactly for. There is a natural gastric acid in the stomach in a healthy person and there could be some harmful acid from bacteria if the stomach isn't healthy ( if i remember correctly that's the lactic acid). Many people take pills that are lowering a natural gastric acid which puts them in more trouble very soon but they feel a brief relief so they think it's helping them. If the pills are a classic antacid that is lowering a natural gastric acid  then I wouldn't take those. My guess is that your boyfriend should avoid overt fats as much as possible. Also, he should cover any nutritional deficiencies (I think I've read that selenium is a mineral very important for the liver) that he might be having. Hope it improves for him soon.

Fatty liver is usually a result of alcoholism. Your boyfriend should definitely stop drinking ASAP.

Excess fructose has been shown to cause fatty liver in people eating a standard diet. Obviously if someone eats a high-fruit diet they'll be getting lots of fructose. Most LFRVs seem to be able to tolerate the high fructose intake without any issues, but maybe your boyfriend is especially sensitive to fructose. He could try to limit high-fructose fruits, avoid fruit juices, and eat more low-GI carbs.

High stomach acid is actually quite rare. People with digestive disorders are much more likely to have low stomach acid. Better to take something like Betaine HCl than an antacid.

Isn't it the refined fructose that isn't accompanied by a ~same amount of glucose (which it is in fruit) that causes problems?

Don't know if the guy consumes a lot of high carb low fat vegan junk? If he drinks alcohol that's a problem ofcourse.

Tell him to balance his intake of sweet sugary foods with savory foods and that will, over time, fix it.

Hello Cristina,

My husband is in a similar condition. How is your boyfriend doing? Can you share what worked and what didnt work for him so far?

Hi Emine,
That's no good that your husband has a similar condition! Unfortunately we didn't really find a cure to the problem. My bf went to see a liver specialist but they were not able to say what was exactly wrong with his liver and they requested he get a CT scan to determine whether there were enlarged lymph nodes anywhere else in his body or if it was just on the liver. But my bf did not get it done as he didn't want to.

So all he has been doing is just continuing to eat a high carb low fat vegan diet, and hoping that everything will heal naturally.  He doesn't want to take medication so he has not been back to see a doctor since.

The abdominal pain has lessened. He does not really get the pain frequently anymore although it does happen on some occasions - however we are not sure if this is related to the fatty liver?

We are just giving it time and hoping that the body will heal itself :)
