Do it supervised.

I noticed that my need for fasting disappeared naturally after following 811 for a couple of years. Before that, I would fast for 1-2 days a week (would alternate between juice and water fasting), and also undertook a 9-day juice fast once, after which I started going off cooked food and begun eating a lot of raw food.

In my personal case, fast did not improve my health as profoundly as following the 811 diet and the healthy lifestyle did. You may want to examine your motives behind your desire to fast and definitely do it under professional observation, if it is longer than 3 days in lenght.

1-3 days on water is fine on your own, anything longer, it's best to do under supervision.  I highly recommend reading Herbert Shelton's books on fasting.  Dr. Graham has a nice short write up here: Sensory Fasting for Optimal Health .  Also, a good site with info. on fasting: http://naturalhygienesociety.org/articles/fasting1.html

As for juice fasting:

"Is it okay to juice fruits and vegetables?

With a few exceptions, it is preferable to consume the whole food rather than to extract part of it and drink it. Drinking fruit or carrot juice without the pulp being present to slow the absorption rate of the nutrients can spike the blood sugar and throw your blood chemistry out of balance. It is far better to consume the whole fruit. One exception is fresh-squeezed citrus fruits, since a significant portion of the pulp is generally retained with the juice. The other "exceptions" are to blend fruits such as melons, and to make smoothies out of various fruits like bananas and strawberries. Liquefying the entire fruit in a blender turns it into a juice or a thick smoothie, while keeping the entire nutritional package together. Blending whole tomato, celery and orange together makes a thick, tasty, salad dressing."  -Dr. Doug Graham   http://foodnsport.com/faq.php

"Hygienists have always advocated the eating of foods whole, not juiced, because juicing food causes a loss of food value by oxidation.  Solid foods are necessary for both physiological and psychological reasons.  Psychologically and physiologically, chewing is a necessity, not a luxury.  It initiates the secretion of both saliva and gastric juice.  The chewing of food adds mucin, a component of saliva, which enhances the digestion of all foods, and occasions the cephalic phase of gastric secretion, which amounts to almost one-half of the total digestive fluids secreted upon a meal.  Solids are necessary for continued gastric and duodenal secretion after the bolus reaches the stomach, and when the chyme is emptied into the intestines.  Solids also occasion stronger peristaltic activity.  This means that the stomach contracts more forcefully when solids containing normal bulk are eaten and empties the contents into the intestines sooner, promoting better digestion.  The gastrolic reflex is more easily activated when solids rather than juices are taken."

i did the juice variety... but i felt desperately in need of something drastic. i tried raw vegan first, but i was too attached to my fatty foods and probably too heavy to get motivated. i agree with DR here... unless you get someone to help you out. you gotta watch out if you have certain conditions / digestive issues (if you are going to do only juice).

i am interested in water fasting, but moreso on the sensory part of things. i feel that my mind needs the quiet, i haven't had any vacation time since about a year ago. try to look deep inside, and see what you want to do. either way, it's a long road. fasting is not a quick fix because if you go back to unhealthy habits, i feel that it is a wash.

This is wonderful advice. I mostly water, and sometimes hot tea fast for 3 days 4 nights and I loved how in tune I felt.. I loved my sleeping patterns I was less drowsy and no brain fog, its true your emotions are totally heightened and more sensative.. I fined the need for food goes away and its nice to fast because we are quiting a sort of natural habit. I do it because I think my body needs to surround its focus on healing itself because I suffer from epilepsy I take medication which is hard on my liver 100mg tablet a day.. my doctor tells me its okay to fast in fact its good because I'm giving my liver a rest from trying to sort the food content I haven't done it longer than 3 days but I started last night AND I find it helps with raw food I am more aware of the food I put into my system and after a fast I can sort of feel what the food is doing to me whether its a good or bad effect which is why I love being raw so much. :) I buddy up with my friend whenever I fast she is good at creating a positive support!

is there anyway you can help me out while I fast I'm going full on water tomorrow with no teas or fresh juice so all the support at the beginning would be greatly appreciated?

Sure, but just so you know I'm definitely no expert on long term fasts.  I've read a bit about it and I'll help if I can.  Just send a pm.

           Not worth it

Tried water fasting for 35 hours. I feel I nearly died when I came out of the fast. I broke the fast with one bite of an apple and got a little sick, then sicker. I could give all the details, but I would rather not on public forums. I'm willing to tell my story in detail in person.

With fasting you can detox too quick. Which is what I think happened. I've tried paleo, neti pots, over exercising, raw vegan, and nothing compares to the detox of fasting. At the time I was almost raw vegan and decided to try fasting as a new experience.

What could possibly go wrong? I mean its only 35 hours right? I knew somebody in real life that went on several one week fasts. My church was encouraging everyone to fast for one day.

I decided to start my fast after my last normal meal of the day. I stayed up to bedtime, went to sleep. Woke up the next day, fasted the full 24 hours drinking lots of water. Then, woke up around hour 33 of the fast. Drank more water and took a bite of the gala or fuji apple. Blam, diarrhea before I could even finish one bite.

In summary, I had the living daylights scared out of me. I've approached everything holistic/natural health skeptically from then on. Relying upon peer reviewed journals. I still haven't emotionally fully recovered from the event. In short, fasting isn't for everyone. I'm not sure what happened. Raw vegan is much safer than fasting.

I planned to fast for a day and then turn fully raw vegan. The most severe detox I've ever gotten with raw vegan is some painful gas. Water fasting for only 35 hours, I got lots of diarrhea and vomiting and that was just the tip of the iceberg. I figure I have to warn people.

Ironically at the same time I recovered from my fast, another person went on a 7 day fast and died. That took away all my self pity. For everything that happened to me, somebody else had it much worse. Anyways, now you know why I joined this site with so much fear in my heart and mind. Why I am slowly slowly becoming raw vegan and relying upon scholarly peer reviewed journals.

Nobody at Arnold's Way had heard anything like my experience. Yet, it did seem to change the way Arnold taught his classes. I just figured it was safe I just wanted to try something new. I can only imagine what would have happened if I would have fasted longer.

Thanks for the read. In summary, the 80/10/10 diet worked for me in the past, then I water fasted for 35 hours got really sick and scared and now I am slowly rebounding from my experience.

I agree rest is great but I think water fasting requires a lot more resting than is feasible in my life.  I can't go without the fuel and do what I do. Makes more sense to me to eat tons of fruit and then, with extra rest, my body can heal just about anything.

Ive personally known and heard of too many people dying from fasting to recommend it any more in 2015.

if you're gonna fast, do a juice fast.  Can't go wrong with a raw orange juice fast.  Considering how toxic and backed up our bodies are, everyone could use a juice fast cleanse

Water fasting for your first fast is not a good idea though.

This may be gross but after doing a five day water fast (preceded by a three day a few weeks earlier) I had a crazy breakout of athlete's foot or some kind of extreme foot itching. Not sure if it was because of the fast but I think it must be related. Has that happened to anyone else?
