30 Bananas a Day!

Hi,

I get comments like this quite often and I am never really sure what to answer. So what do you say to someone who tells you about all the bad effects on the climate that is caused by shipping fruits around the planet?

Well I do try to eat as local as possible most of the time. Especially because tropical fruits are just far too expensive and therefore just a treat for me. But what about all those bananas?

I know you can tell a person who is living on factory meat and dairy how bad this is for the environment. But a lot of people I know try to get their meat, milk and eggs from local farmers - so what would you tell them?

well if these people eat processed foods you can talk about how they are probably supporting Monsanto and by eating grains they are contributing to the rape of the Earth and loss of topsoil and its nutrients.

Or you can say that even though you don't live in the tropics, you still want to eat the foods of a normal human.

And when they proudly proclaim that they buy locally raised meat you can smile and say, "Yeah well there's still a rotting carcass in you."

It might also help to mention how methane is much more problematic than carbon dioxide.
Dr D hired someone to do an analysis and found that cooking is responsible for more green house gases than cars!

Lots of meat comes from the destroyed rain forests of south America.

You can grow 20 times more food on an acre with fruit than grains and the difference between animal products is probably a hundred times more. (read 'Grain Damage')

There has been a wonderful discussion about this a few times and I am completely convinced that eating 100% imported fruit is significantly better for the environment than eating all local.
"We can feed two and a half times more people with an acre of fruit trees than with an acre of grain." (15)

I love this article!!! :)
I think you guys might find this article interesting.

It's lengthy, but for the calories produced by fruit perspective start reading at "The Best Way To Save The Environment"
Wow! Great article, thanks!
Maybe fruits can be shipped around, but you can also find local ones in season, and depnd on non-local ones part of the year only.
Most people eating and buying what they think is local meat egg and such in fact are buying locally grown stuff with imported food for the animals. Since you need 10 units of food for the animal to produce one unit of the stuff they'll sell as food, basically, they ship around the world 10 times more stuff than your fruits.
Also, even if the fruits have to be shipped, they don't need to be processed, packed in plastic, stored in refrigerated trucks and stores (refrigeration is a big big energy consumer). And fruits don't pup ecoli everywhere because they don't eat the proper food they need.
Of course, local fruits would be better. But honestly, imported ones are still better than local animal stuff.
I would tell them to plant fruit trees and bushes, buying local meat and dairy is just pretence at caring for the environment and they are not caring for themselves or their families either.
Only a tiny percentage buy local meat and dairy, most of it is shipped all over the place.
