I'm a Brit in love with the idea of durian hunting...
I'm currently in the canary Islands and I'm not looking forward to going home, in fact I don't even have a return ticket so I'm not going home yet lol
I went to Thailand this year and didn't eat enough durian so now I want to spend the next 6 months eating as much as I care for in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
I travel alone, but I was thinking it would be cool to meet up with people or travel with someone. I have a bike that I'm keen to take with me.
If you're in that part of the world, have experience with durian in January onwards or fancy joining me I would be grateful for your response!
In 3 weeks I'll head to southeast asia with the exact same mission :D
I'll start my hunt on borneo and I'll be there at least until mid of january. Later on I plan to visit Sumatra, Malaysia and for sure Thailand. In the first two weeks of january I'll travel with a friend from Serbia and in Thailand I'll meet a lot of people that I know but for most of my trip I don't have travelmates yet so I would be pleased to meet you!
That's awesome! I was told Sumatra is the best place for fruit so I'll probably go there too :) I don't have a date set yet but I thought it would be cool to go Fruit Winter in Chiang Mai to meet other fruitbats and that's in January but I've been told fruit in Thailand in Jan isn't the best.
Do you have a bicycle or are you just going to be travelling by foot? I'll send you a message so we can swap details :)
I don't know a lot about the fruits in Sumatra, just that there's durian 365 days a year :D
My main raison to visit Sumatra is a raw food community in the north of the island
I won't go to the Fruit Winter because in this time there's durian season on borneo. I prefer to visit Thailand from april to june :D
I'll travel by foot. It's more flexible and less expensive.
I have contacted them to show my interest and have to reply to their questionnaire but as I'm currently away I don't have the appropriate facilities to reply in detail. I get put off by so many questions (including the one from an 801010 farm in hawaii!) so I don't know if I will pursue a place there. Plus apparently I would need a tent and bedding, which is something I won't be travelling with.
I need to check the map for Borneo but if you say it's durian season well I think I'd rather get my teeth into them!
I think I'll probably still be bringing my bicycle because I like touring nowadays and exploring without getting sore feet!
I'd love to join you for a bit! ill be in thailand in one week from now until whenever i feel like :)
That's awesome :) I am still deciding on a plane ticket so I'm not sure when I'll arrive. The best place for durian now is Malaysia and Indonesia apparently. Thailand doesn't have its season until around April/May and until July/August.
I'll be in Bangkok and Chiang Mai from March 19th to April 2nd. Fruit is a big part of my trip :) Looking for some friends to enjoy with with.
When I got to smell that divine odor for the first time I fell totally in love and now I'm eating 5 to 10 durians every single day :D
I also wanted to puke the first time I tried it, then also wasn't drawn to it the next time. Wasn't until the 3rd or 4th exposure that I finally fell in love (maybe took a couple years). For some it's love at first sight, but for many it's an acquired taste. :)
