They are like humans, when starved of fruits, they will go to other sources of food for calories.
Put a starved bonobo in a cage with rats and it will eat the rats. Put it in a cage with unlimited fruits n shoots and be friends with the rats.
There is youtube vids of cows eating ducks, squirrels eating blue jays, and pelicans eating pigeons.
Every year a few toddlers are snatched and eaten by rogue starving adult chimps. We are chopping down their forrests to crow livestock and livestock feed and these monkey are starving and desperate to eat something.
So dont monkey's eat small amounts of humans? Yes.
We did an experiement with wild monkeys in the jungles of malaysia with durian. We put out one durian that was rotten and full of maggots. The biggest monkeys ate it and fought for it. Then the next day we put out about 20kg of prime durian and they ALL came down and shared and only ate the good stuff and left the rotten durian, maggots and seeds untouched.
We are the same. If Im on an epic ride and there is only semi ripe fruit, I will eat it for sure. But if Ive got enough calories I would normally snub that quality of fruit.
There are many reports of humans eating humans in order to survive famine.
Ship wrecks, prisons, famines, plane wrecks, ships with broken sails...animals will eat almost anything in order to survive. If I run out of fruit, hope you can run faster than 38mins for 10k Shawn. :)
Actually, this is correct. If you look at the scientific literature, you find that on average....
* 2% of the calories in chimp's diet come from eating animals, but about 2/3 of the meet they eat is eaten during the dry season (which is only 2 months of the year)
* By calorie, chimps eat more termites than meat (yes, that's right!), and strongly prefer eating insects over eating meat (as assessed by foraging time per calorie).
So if chimps eat an average of 0.6% of their calories from meat outside of the dry season (and who knows, the remaining 0.6% could be in times of less food during the wet season), and 10 times as much calories from insects, it's really hard to believe that's necessary even for chimps to have any meat in their diet. And of course, humans need even less protein and eat even less tough plant items than chimps.
So clearly, humans are frugivores (eat primarily fruit + leaves)....unless you think Richard Wrangham is right and cooking made us human and instead accounts for our smaller jaw (ugh!)
I've read that this hunting behavior has been seen only in a select few populations of chimpanzees...for a long time it was considered "normal" chimpanzee behavior, but now it's looking like some oddity of the species. Chimps can also be extremely violent with each other...like premeditated mass murders...scary!
Gorillas are purely vegetarian (vegan?) as far as I've read
Nikola, if animal products guaranteed sufficient b12 levels, how come we see rampant b12 issues in society today where peeps are eating animal product for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Have you seen my youtube vid 'raw vegan blood tests'?
Check em out.
You dont live in the tropics either bro? Neither do I. Doug Graham lives in England.
Humans from time to time eat human. Should we start eating humans 1% of the time? I mean its local, sustainable and ethical. Someone dies, why let their body go to waste? :)
What human essential nutrients do animal products provide that plant foods dont? ZERO.
You live in Serbia. Humans need tropical temps to survive yeah? and when we turn on that heater or put on some warm clothing, we are creating our own little piece of the tropics. When we put honey with our rice, jam on our bread, we are creating our own little piece of tropical fruits.
I dont expect people to stay cold cos the gas pipeline, clothing, heaters etc come from thousands of miles away.
I dont expect people to eat sub par food cos fruit comes from thousands of miles away.
I expect peeps to do what they need to do to be the best they can be and make the planet a better place for everyone, the animals and mother nature.
