so i am home for the summer, and i have a gym membership. i'm not working, and i just go to the gym. i like to take all of the classes. i haven't taken all of them yet, but they are fun. i take a spin class every day, and then i take some other classes. the past few days i have been going 3 and 4 hours a day. Do you think it's a waste of time? do you think that that is too much exercise? or do you think it is good to exercise so many hours a day?
also what about rest days?
I don't think its a waste of time, no. If you're having fun, how is that a waste of time. The only potential issue I would imagine is if you're working your body too hard. It will depend on the intensity of the classes you're taking. I usually spend 3-4 hours in the pool most days and "work out" by playing, dancing and taking care of my kids. I take a couple days off a week. I think your body will regulate your activity by being tired when you get home and therefore you'll be spending a lot of your physical energy exerted at the gym and if that's fine with you, what's the problem. Only if you have other things that you need to do and you're getting obsessed with the exercising would it be a problem in my book.
Have fun and listen to your body. :)
I have had long periods of time of doing 4 hours or more of exercise a day, plus working full time at an 8 hour a day job that can be physically demanding on top of that. I eat about 5,000 calories a day and spend 10 hours in bed though. I certainly don't think that I could keep doing that much exercise day in and day out if I wasn't eating and sleeping as much as I do.
That being said 4 hours a day is quite a bit and would be over training for the average person (including myself perhaps) I totally understand your desire to be active more than 30 - 60 minutes a day though.
When I do a lot more physical activity than I'm used to (like if I spend 8 hours outside digging) I will usually wake up after only a few hours of sleep that night and won't be able to fall asleep again unless I eat something to make up for all those extra calories I burned, and if I reduce the amount of activity I do (like recently when I had a vacation and I decided that I wasn't going to do any exercise at all to give my body a break) I feel far too awake to fall asleep and stay asleep. When I maintain a regular amount of exercise I sleep great.
Is it a waste of time to spend 3 - 4 hours a day in the gym? Before giving an answer to that I would really like to know what your fitness goals are Jupiter.
I personally take days off when ever I feel like I need them rather than having set days off whether I feel like I need them or not. Please listen to your body and pay close attention to your sleep, mood, energy, and appetite. If they are suffering it's probably time to give yourself a break.
As long as your having fun! Although maybe spread out those hours throughout the week so you don't get burnt out and just quit cold turkey! And yes I think you should take at least 1 or 2 rest days a week, so that your body has time to recover. And sleep for you is very important if you're going to work out that long, so make sure you're getting at least 9-10 hours.
I hear ya. Exercise is important and has a lot of positive benefits, but it doesn't do to let it monopolise your time. You shouldn't make exercise and healthy eating the focus of your life, but do it so as improve your quality of life. We are finite beings and should make the most of the time we have.
I incorporate exercise into my daily routine by walking everywhere and generally trying be active, and I typically devote 30 mins a day to strenuous walking/running. It's not a waste of time in that it puts me in a good mood and benefits my health. But at the same time I feel like I could be, yunno, reading a book or something.
