30 Bananas a Day!

Hi Guys

A different B12 question for you - I have Crohns Disease and had the part of my colon removed which allows me to absorb B12 so have regular injections - at first they were every 3 months then I got them increased to every 2 months then 6 weeks.  As my health has improved and I'm running further distances I'm getting more fatigued again and not recovering - is this a diet problem or do we need more B12 the more active we are. 

I did my first half marathon in 4 years on Sunday but am still really tired which is unusual for me.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Fatigued? Thats why 99.9% of runners GUZZLE caffeine lol!

Get to bed around sundown for a few months. Get the water so your wizz'n clear at least 10 times a day. Get MINIMUM 10g of carbs per kg of bodyweight per day.

Have a break from training. When was the last time you took a few months off and regenerated? Just doing low volume, low intensity stuff like walking and hiking and riding to the shops etc?

Lance took a few years off. If he didnt, he would have never won the TDF. Same with Greg Lemond.

Thanks for your reply Durianrider - I've only just got back to this level of training after 2 years enforced rest - but it was due to illness and surgery!  I've built up very very slowly and only been able to since the B12 deficiency was spotted, once I had the jabs I started to feel normal again, before that I could hardly manage to get out of bed - literally.

The benefit from the injections seemed to last longer before I started training again - I think the most I've done is 25 miles a week over 4 days.  My real question was do we need more B12 if we are more active - as someone who cannot absorb intrinsic factor through diet (as that body part has been removed) would I need to have the injections more frequently.

Pre illness I used to run marathons but always recovered much quicker, I'm tired after a 2 mile run now - am I running low on B12 due to extra activity or could it be something else.  I don't have any caffine - I did the 1/2marathon on bananas and dates then had a huge green smoothie when I got home :-)

ps - it's not just tiredness - I'm feeling properly fatigued as I used to when ill

Hi,you are doing impressive things with the running achieving the the goals set for yourself,but I am wondering weather you need to take into account the fairly recent change of diet and lifestyle and the detox processes that might be producing these symptons in which case you might need to listen to what your body is saying- slow down a little-and be assured it will all happen in time.Massaging aching limbs and drinking plenty might help.All the best...

Thanks Lynana - I did a half marathon on 26th Feb and was felt so fatigued the week after made myself rest for a whole week - well as much as you can with a hyperactive foster kid anyway!  My B12 was due last week too so the fatigue, long runs and low B12 coincided and it was all I could do to get out of bed.  Had the jab last Thursday and managed a long run yesterday and am raring to go today.  I asked the nurse and the doctor how if I might need more B12 because of the activity and they didn't know - our GP service, useless but invaluable at the same time!  I couldn't find out any more info on the net either so none the wiser and will just have to listen to my body and do what it tells me............
