I've been doing high raw (70%) and low fat for about 2-3 weeks now. I'm drinking
20oz of fresh veggie juice in the morning (kale/cucumber/carrots/celery/collards/1-2apples).
A couple of hours after the juice I go repeatedly go through this detox pattern involving:
-sore neck and shoulders (trapezius)
-gas, sometimes mucous in the stool
- a slight tingling/burning sensation in my throat (lots of mucous and congestion in the throat chakra so it's not surprising
- sometimes runny nose with mucous that burns (this seems to have stopped)
- sometimes very thirsty so I drink water and get frequent cloudy urination
- insomnia (if I drink the juice in the evening)
- sometimes a big zit or too or other little skin rashes
Seems I get this reaction only when I use collards/kale/broccoli in the juice.
It feels like the brassicas greens initiate a detox reaction. Anyone get this?
I'm going through this right now and sometimes I wish it wasn't so uncomfortable. I just ate
some cooked rice sprinkled with hemp seeds to slow down the reaction.
Anyone have good advice on this?
I like the fact that I'm detoxing. Should I try to slow it down or just drink water and celebrate it?
Thanks for your help.
Umm try experimenting with leaving out certain veggies in the juice. Without knowing you entire diet/medical history it's possible it's detoxing
a read through the welcome wagon will explain why juicing is not ideal for most folks and greens should only be taken in the amounts you could eat them whole.
Ok thanks. I'm noticing the reactions are not as bad as they were a few weeks back. Initially it was a lot more mucous and fatigue and this seems to be lessening so I think I'm just going through detox.
I'm still waiting for my 80/10/10 book so I don't know all the details about the diet yet.
when you start smoking you cough and have mucus and nausea and fatigue but that lessens after a few weeks as your body adjusts. you have to use your noggin as well as listen to your sense perceptions! ;)

Save the 'juice' (drinking) for whole fruit smoothies (which one should also 'chew' to instigate saliva in mouth) allowing for maximum calorie intake. Eat the greens whole, which is also good for teeth!
Hope you are feeling better now. What many in the raw food world tout as detox is actually side effects which should be avoided not encouraged.
Someone already directed you to the juicing blog and I highly recommend skip the juices and focus on whole raw foods.
The next problem is high oxalate foods such as kale, celery, carrots, etc. High oxalate foods can cause all of the symptoms you mentioned:
For optimum results:
The following formula works well for long term health and success:
Diet in a Banana Peel
Eat a raw frugivore diet where most carbohydrates and calories come from whole raw ripe sweet and juicy fruits like oranges, papaya, or mangoes, supplemented with about ½-2 heads of lettuce greens a day (not kale, chard, and spinach) and about a handful of raw nuts or seeds a day. Eat simple meals but a rainbow of foods over a period of time.
Eat enough on a daily basis with at least 2500 calories for females and at least 3000 calories for males. Drink 2-4 quarts of water a day and pee clear. Get 8-12 hours of sleep as needed. Exercise about 30 minutes a day 5-6 days a week with at least one day off for rest and repairs. Get about 30 minutes of sunshine a day on your skin for vitamin D, mental health, eye health, and healthy bones and teeth.
