30 Bananas a Day!

Hey guys, this is my first discussion!

Anyway, I can't be fully raw at the moment because as a teenager I live with my parents  and don't have time for a job(though this will hopefully change within a year.)  I currently eat around 1200-2000 calories of fruit and veggies, however since I don't want to under eat, I want to incorporate some cooked carbs.  Due to a lot of what I have seen on this site, it's not optimal, but fine to eat 80-10-10 cooked vegan if you can't go fully raw at the time.

So here's my question...

I'm very confused about grains.  Which one's are okay to eat?  What about gluten?  What are other cooked foods okay to eat?

Thanks so much!

Story of my life lol, I'm 15 and have the same issue...

I feel okay if I eat quinoa and lentils... occasionally sprouted bread (such as Ezekiel). Always have this in the evening, though, as fruits provide more energy during the day!

Hey, we're almost the same age!

Yeah, I eat mostly fruit for the breakfast/lunch and I gives me a lot of energy. :)

Hey Zoe

Best to eat non-gluten grains like quinoa, millet, buckwheat, amaranth etc if you are going to eat grains. If you are going to eat gluten grains, I would go with spelt and oats (oats are not technically a gluten grain, but often contain some gluten due to the factories they are processed in, as well as some proteins that some people react to in the same way as gluten).

I would also choose pulses and root vegetables like sweet potatoes and potatoes.

Take care

Thanks so much for your reply!  I'm going to try to have mostly non-gluten, except when necessary.  And I've never tried amaranth, so this will be exciting :)

I'm in the same situation too.  Sometimes I have brown rice, quinoa, tubers. But I'm not really sure which ones are okay.

Yeah, I think as long as its minimally processed and no salt or spices they're fine.

I like your profile picture haha

I am the same. I am at uni and cannot possibly afford all raw.

I think most humans are naturally a bit gluten sensitive. I'd stick to brown rice over breads but if I was going to eat breads I'd get gluten free and wholegrain if possible!

I have been looking at porridge and wonder if it's okay? I think it is about 75% carbs 15% fat and 10% protein so it's kind of okay but wonder if it's any good for digestion or if we can even get any nutrients from it?

It is ok if you can digest it for sure.

Take care

Yeah, I do think human's are sensitive to gluten(maybe me especially though I'm not sure.)

Thanks! :)

That's really interesting, I'll definitely try to find the book somewhere.

Yes, grains/low fat cooked are definitely better than other foods, and they don't hurt animals either! :)

Thanks for posing the question! My parents want me to "show a little flexibility" so this info is exactly what I need'

Haha the EXACT same thing for me.
