30 Bananas a Day!

So, I recently started college and found it rather difficulty to stay 100% LFRV. The dining halls have very little variety in fresh fruit - only bananas, apples, oranges, and grapefruit. They do, however, have a selection of canned fruit. Now, I'm wondering if eating brown rice for my calories would be better than eating the canned fruit. I have yet to actually eat any canned fruit because anything canned might have BPA in it (from what I've heard).

I'd MUCH rather have me some quinoa (plain) with sliced tomatoes on top, than turn to CANNED fruit.

I would go for fruit in it's own juice if possible.

BPA - over hyped reporting made that a huge fear. It is something to be aware of but considering how many billions of cans of canned goods people go through in the USA alone you don't really read about BPA poisoning. Any effects from BPA would take place over a long period of time thus there would be any number of other environmental things that could have made a problem that may have been blamed on BPA. I thought BPA was more in plastics than canned foods, but I could be wrong there.

Combine the brown rice and fruit for a meal.

Better yet, go with Freddy's comment below - tomato on the rice. Take a tomato to work with out.

Since the process of canning fruits -  as all foods - involves heating I don´t think there is much nutritional value left in it.

that is an assumption though, not a lab test.

Canned fruit is cooked so I'd go with freshly, whole cooked food like rice.

Why prefer heated carbs from grains over heated carbs from fruit?

because heated grains taste like crap without adding things to them compared to heated fruit, duh!  Who would want to eat something that tastes good on its own?  Our bodies were designed with faulty tongues that do not work properly, in fact, those taste buds, that's just our imagination, they don't exist, so we need to be eating everything that tastes bad on its own.

On a more serious note, the only heated whole fruit that gains nutrition after being cooked is tomatoes (aka, tomato soup) as far as I know...  the rest of them lose overall nutrition

Only lycopene becomes more absorbable from heating the tomato though... The rest of the delicate nutrients in the tomato are denatured or deranged. All enzymes are also damaged.

well, we'll have to wait for a study done on the absorption of cooked tomatoes, because all I know for now is in the link, until I see further research done, not that I'd eat raw tomatoes, even if you were proven to be right, because I personally don't like the taste of them right now, they make me gag

they do add vitamin C back into the tomato soup via citric acid

never get tomato soup with hfcs

blending up canned tomatoes into a soup and adding your own sweetener/spices/herbs is better than canned tomato soup

Food with high water content matters.

Hey Vera,

I would roll more with the rice but not totally rule out the canned stuff.  Have the canned fruit if you feel like it.  Ive been solid on this diet for 3 yr and that is what I would do.  I can feel a definite difference if I do eat cooked grains but please keep in mind they wont kill you.  I personally find canned fruit to taste bad and would find it difficult making it my staple. :)
