I think when we call non-human animals animals it makes it sound like we are not animals.
We should call them people, because they persons.
Or if you're talking to a bigot who wouldn't understand you, you could say non-human people.
I think this would encourage people to think about their actions against non-human people more ethically.
Yep...or I say 'other earthlings', 'other sentient beings' or 'my friends' :D
I don't think that the intelligence gap is large enough to not give many non-human animals personhood.
It wouldn't make any sense to call them humans, but they are individuals with their own thoughts and personalities so I think we should extend our idea of personhood to them.
What is the definition of 'person'..this could be a very philosophical discussion so it's not that simple. And what is the intelligence? If you consider intelligence as only physical, material, brain thing then we are probably not that different than animals. Our brains are 'better' maybe but that's not so important when discussing this subject probably. But the eternal spirit that's something completely different.
Im pretty sure there is no evidence for an eternal spirit...
In the 'physical' realm there is no evidence for a lot of things but they still exist.
Nothing can be said to exist without evidence, although it might exist, we do not yet know that it does.
It is a spiritual thing, you can experience it if you're open for it.
Hey William, I totally agree with you. I do the opposite however, rather than refer to non human animals as humans or people, I just make sure I include humans as animals.
Humans ARE Mammals. Mammals ARE Animals. As such, Humans ARE Animals. It is illogical to refer to animals as separate from humans. it wouldn't matter if humans were twice as intelligent as we were, at no level of intelligence does an animal cease to be an animal. The level of intelligence is totally irrelevant.
Humans are a particular type of animal, so it doesn't;t make sense to call other animals 'human' however.
If intelligence mattered, who set the benchmark? why settle at humans, why not make dolphins non animal, afterall they are significantly more intelligent than many other animals.
What is the difference in intelligence from human to the next most intelligent animal, and then from that animal to the least intelligent animal?
And why stop there. Even within the human race, some people are rather dumb, whilst others posses super powerful minds, and we shouldn't subjugate those who are less intelligent. it doesn't make them less human, and being super clever doesn't make one less animal.
Ya i do it both ways too xD
thanks for you're input! i agree 100%
I guess i think that since some think you can be an animal, and since you're a non-human animal you're some how less than a person. Like some view black humans as less that people. So I by making sure to call them people (plural for person, showing that they have thoughts and feelings) you can make people who still think humans are animals, but think other animals don't have the same capacity see that they do. hope that made sense!
Yes...humans love to put themselves up nice and high on that pedestal...not sure why...
