30 Bananas a Day!

Hey guys

Selling my old second hand bike to buy a new sports model, don't have alot of money
so it'll be a second hand one for sure.

I'm really interested in the one on the picture above,

description:

NEW: €999 , SELLING FOR: €250

bought in 2008 and used it less than 1000km

size: 51cm (I'm 162cm so should be ok?)

group: Sora (double)

What do you guys think, I don't know anyone else for advice so...

should I buy it?

Thanks , Jolien

Specs look ok for the money.  As long as you can guarantee it hasn't been crashed.

The original price seems super high for a Sora though in 2008.  For 1k in 2008 you would have expected Tiagra minimum.

If you can barter down to 200 you've probably got a deal.

Thanks! going to try and go for another bike or maybe this one for 200.

What brand do you recommend?

All depends ... Specialized are good solid frames. Giant/Trek/Liv too also solid as rocks. I'd avoid anything carbon, although you're unlikely to get carbon at that price.

I would probably focus on the gearing/brakes over brand at that spend bracket.  If you can pick something up with a Shimano Tiagra/Sora set up than you're probably getting a good deal.

I've never ridden a Felt but have heard good things and they have pro models which is never a bad sign. :)

Hi, I know a nice saddle you can get for under £200 :)

But seriously, at that price, it's tricky as your options are limited.

Can you save? Every time you add say £50, your options increase a lot.

Just as a guide, you can get new bikes near your budget http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes?cm_re=mmcycling-_-...

I am sure you have a similar shop in your country, just do a little research. As Jason suggests, Sora/Tiagra is a basic entry level, which is fine.

The problem is if you buy a second hand bike, you then need it serviced which will cost you probably 40% of the bike! you may then find you need tyres - with age, no matter it's use, these can start to crack, check for this, look closely at the rubber.

If you can find a local bike shop, explain to them your budget, I am sure they will be very helpful. This way, they might also help you with the servicing and fit. Consider a smaller size, if they offer two options. for some reason bike shop workers always recommend a bike that is one size too big, and it's easier to adjust a smaller bike than it is to adjust a big which is too big.

Show us some pics when you buy one :)

Oooo Sora...I don't like the feel of them, all plasticy and spongey, but hey its personal choice on that, doesn't really matter.

My Tips

1. Test Ride then decide

2. Try to get a bike fit (the comfort factor is INVALUABLE!!)

3. Try to get it set up ie. indexed, brakes adjusted etc. by a pro
