30 Bananas a Day!

So I just got my blood test results in, and they don't look so great :( it says I'm at risk for coronary heart disease. I do not have tests prior to starting this lifestyle but I was at a normal weight, 135lbs 5'7" and I climbed maybe 5 hours a week. 

I've been raw till 4 for about 7 months now and I don't own a scale but I have gained maybe 20lbs (not sure if water or fat) I feel healthier besides feeling puffy and heavier, and my skin has cleared up nicely. I get at least 9 or more hours of sleep and I eat 2500-3000 calories everyday. I also started walking 30 minutes a day and biked 2 or 3 times a week and cut climbing to once a week. I stay hydrated and drink the recommended amount of water. I was also fasted for 12 hours prior to this test since it was required. 

I would love some insight on my test and suggestions on what I should be doing, thanks!

Last time I checked, my total cholesterol was 90 with an HDL of 28. My LDL was in the low 40's. Still a good HDL:LDL so I'm not worried in the least about a low HDL.

Coronary heart disease can have many causes, not just eating animal or high fat products.  

I looked at your results and you seem to have a thyroid and iron deficiency anemia going on.  These can cause imbalances in other areas of your body.  I am not sure you had a liver function test, but perhaps get that tested too.  

Continue to consult with your doctor regarding your treatment.  

I am not sure if you simply have a thyroid problem, or may be have been undereating or have an underlying eating disorder.  

Cliche I know, but to improve iron naturally, increase caloric intake over all, and eat 1/2-2 heads of lettuce greens a day, eat nutrient dense fruits like oranges, and a handful of nuts or seeds a day or avocado.  

You might need to eat low oxalate foods:

And or follow a goitrogenic diet and avoid foods high in goitrogens for your thyroid.  This might mean elminating grains, potatoes, and again high oxalate foods like kale, chard, and spinach.  


High oxalate foods and foods high in antinutrients like phytates may also interfere with nutrient absorption.  

Cholesterol and Triglycerides 

We really do not need cholesterol in diet because as you can see, the human body is capable of making its own:-D

Our own cholesterol is more body friendly, so I would not panic immediately about it, and just troubleshoot as to reasons why and how to improve it.  

Some people recovering from standards diets may continue to have elevated levels for a few months as arteries heal and deposits break off.  

Sometimes liver is malfunctioning.  Sometimes medications, drugs, alcohol can cause issues. 

Cholesterol can act, just like a bar bouncer, as an escort of bad particles in the system.   Some people eating grains who are wheat and gluten sensitive might have higher natural cholesterol levels.  

Starchy foods promote chronically high glucose levels and or high insulin levels.  The glucose our bodies do not use could be changed to triglycerides.  

Forcus more on foods with simple sugars like fructose found in oranges.

Give yourself time to heal and follow the rest of the things we recommend like sunshine and early nights and enough sleep.  

Retest in three-six months for signs of improvement.  

99-100% Raw Long Term Success

Eat a raw frugivorous diet where most carbohydrates and calories come from whole, raw, ripe, sweet, and juicy fruits like oranges, papaya, or mangoes, supplemented with about ½-2 heads of lettuce greens a day ,(not high oxalate veggies like kale, chard, and spinach), and about a handful of raw nuts or seeds a day. Eat simple meals (like mono meals, or only use a few ingredients) but a rainbow of foods over a period of time.  

Eat enough on a daily basis with at least 2500 calories for females and at least 3000 calories for males.  Drink 8 or more cups of water a day and pee clear. Get 8-12 hours of sleep as needed. Exercise about 30 minutes a day 5-6 days a week with at least one day off for rest and repairs.  Get about 30 minutes of sunshine a day on your skin for vitamin D, mental health, eye health, and healthy bones and teeth.

My test said I had low t3 uptake and maybe slightly low t4, but the others normal. I'm not sure what that means even after googling. Before this lifestyle I did have a problem with purging, but not severe, it was very occasional. I also had a very stressful breakup about 2 years ago which caused a dramatic weightloss then I started staying up to go drinking a lot for a year and eating SAD diet things and gained 20-30lbs. For a period I also did cocaine and adderall. I met my current boyfriend and started rock climbing and trying to look for ways to get healthier, I wanted to try paleo but I couldn't seem to ever leave out rice and bread so I knew it would never work out. So about 7 months I decided to try high carb since it seemed so easy. 

I understand and I might need a long time to heal since I obviously abused myself quite a bit. I do feel much happier and content than I did before. 

Could you also help me with my iron issue? I don't have a problem with any eating disorder anymore, it's just that I become very full easily and I have to try very hard to stuff myself sometimes. I admit I don't always eat a head of lettuce a day, I maybe have half a head. I have read that beets are good source of iron, should I start having more of those?

@whitney, I seem to be having some tech difficulties with computer and my font is doing weird things plus I have things to do and need to log off. I will try to catch up with you more in the next day or two.  

Keep following some of the suggestions posted here and yes, give body time to heal.  

I am happy you have blood work done because now you have a benchmark of healing.  And on days you might not feel good, you know its not in your head:-D  

I will have to look up Dr. Gregers red cabbage method lol.  

In the mean time, for more sterile and consistent results, you might want to get urinalyses strips like these:


Some stores in USA sell them OTC, or you might have to ask at pharmacy desk.  You probably do not need a prescription to buy them.  

I recommend these because with food stuffs, there is often inconsistencies in how food is grown, soil, nutrient content, and or who has handled the food ie is it sterile, are you getting a true result or contaminants from someone's hand etc.  

These strips will just provide a guideline though. They are fascinating to use and watch how foods you eat affect PH.  They may not give perfect results, so any doubts, you can visit your doctor again and have a sterile and more precise test done.

Thank you PK! I did look up a symptom I have been experiencing which is my stamina seems to have gone down which can be from iron deficiency. 

I will look into buying the test strips!

30BaD recommends getting one right away and then as you like.  Blood tests can vary greatly depending on time of day, what you are currently eating, your level of rest and exercise. 

Here is what DR says on topic:
One blood test doesnt mean much. Good or bad. What matters is a pattern of testing over at least 5 years. Plus athletic performances. If you can't run around the block at a decent clap then you got some things to work on. :)
Most pro athletes test their blood daily to weekly. This is to see how the drugs and training are affecting their biochemistry. Calcium, sugar, tri's, hct etc can change in minutes. Get at least 10 tests done over time before you jump to any conclusions. :)
Its like doing a time lapse video. One frame doesnt tell us much at all. 

Definitely not bashing the lifestyle, I don't think I've been eating as optimally as I should which is my own fault. I understand certain things can change in the body but does everything change so rapidly? My triglycerides were really high for being in a fasted state, and I'm not sure how iron levels work in the body and if the low number was only temporary. 

I had had my blood drawn around 10am as well.

I am no expert but I can tell you there was a member last year who had been on 100% HCRV for over a year and tested high in triglycerides.  He did a consult with Dr. Doug and was told to get more sleep.  He did and his triglycerides went down to normal.  I would just keep working on all my lifestyle factors and test regularly to see how things go. 32 Elements of Health: How Round is Your Wheel?

Hey Whitney - don't panic! Without previous test results you can't which direction your blood values are headed in. Just keep doing what you're doing and get some more tests in a few months. Maybe add B12 and vitD to your next tests.

You have a mild iron deficiency but not iron deficiency anaemia (yet). You might consider a gentle iron supplement like iron bisglycinate or Spatone (but don't be tempted to take a high dose). Otherwise, eating vitamin C-rich and acidic foods alongside iron-rich foods like greens and pulses will improve absorption. The more greens you can eat the better, darker greens usually have a higher iron content - personally I don't think there's any need to avoid kale and spinach because of their oxalate content. Even small amounts of red onion with meals can also improve iron absorption. Avoid teas & coffee, and maybe limit wholegrains in favour of tubers. Iron levels usually take a long time to improve.

Your uric acid and liver function tests are fine but still a little higher than you might expect on a high-fruit diet. This might be because of the alcohol/drugs you mentioned? They should continue to improve if you avoid alcohol, drugs, and high protein foods.

Your HDL (good cholesterol) is quite low - slightly low HDL seems to be common for low fat vegans. Your LDL (bad cholesterol) is also low though so I wouldn't worry about heart disease, maybe get another test in the future and keep an eye on the HDL. I've heard that eating more omega-3's (greens, walnuts, hemp, flax, chia) can boost HDL?

Lots of the blood results I've seen posted on here show raised triglycerides, although yours are higher than most. You're still below the 'dangerous' level of 500 though. Triglycerides are a consequence of fructose metabolism so you'd expect them to go up a bit from eating fruit. DR and other long-termers seem to have trigs in-range so maybe it's just a temporary thing? Maybe if you've had issues with your liver in the past (impossible to say without a previous blood test) it could explain the high trigs.

I don't know much about the thyroid stuff. Your T4 levels are perhaps a bit less than ideal, and TSH is a little bit high. Perhaps suggestive of v. mild hypothyroidism. Except for iodine supplementation I don't know what else you can do to boost the thyroid. And iodine supplements can be risky - they might cause or worsen hashimoto's thyroiditis. Don Bennett was big on iodine supps until DR banned him.

I forgot to mention I quit smoking cigarettes about 4 months ago, and I started when I was 19! I really don't expect to be healed in such a short time after all the abuse. I also did take stimulant supplements for workouts that contained caffeine and theombrine? The stimulant in cacao. That's all been halted since I started high carb. Smoking was the last thing I gave up. And I have had an occasional drink of alcohol, like a beer once a month. I have been using a little bit of iodine once a week. I haven't noticed much difference besides feeling a bit warmer.
