30 Bananas a Day!

I've just been to the doctors to organised blood tests and testing for b12, I tried asking for a homocycstine test & umma/mma test. I'm not very up to speed with what any of this means could someone please clarify for me? She said she's going to do a hemoglobin test and judge the amount of b12 by the amount of red blood cells I have in the body, witch makes sense since low b12 = larger & less red blood cells? I will update in a couple of weeks with the results but I was just wondering what this all means :)

I'm no expert on these medical issues, but I have had my hemoglobin tested many times. And from my experience testing your hemoglobin is not that accurate. For example if you are dehydrated your test will show a higher hemoglobin, drink some water and have a new test a couple of hours later and your levels will be lover. I would have a specific B12 test. Don't know were and how you are having your tests done, but if you are paying for them than you can have what ever you desire.

I'm not paying for my tests, and the doctor that I go to see said this is how she usually tests for b12, I did request a umma/mma/homocystine test but she said they don't usually test like that and seemed dubious of the whole thing. She also said the vegan diet was extreme, I know lots of people will tell me to change my doctor to someone more "supportive", but I believe she is very supportive, just misinformed, and it just another opportunity to share opinions and educate ourselves further. I will make sure I'm hydrated before having my tests taken. I usually drink between 3-5L a day, raw - 4 stylie. :)

Live in the UK, might even get my b12 on the nhs for free, if not I'm screwed becuase you cant buy it in the uk?

If your doc thinks that your diet is extreme, isn't that a good reason to do all the possible tests?

She is doing a blood test to make sure all my levels are correct, but I don't think she thinks being vegan particularly influences b12 specifically, and therefore isn't going to do all the tests for that, I'm thinking of getting 2nd/3rd opinions in a few months, but a life's work doesn't need to be rushed :)
