I love to get my date on... I can buy Deris, Halawis and Medjools mostly at the moment. But every now and then I bite into one and notice, as I rip out the stone, an alarmingly faint tang that is cold at first... Once the cold is gone and then the saliva mixes with it on the tongue, it turns ever ranker and more sour in the nastiest way imaginable! Then upon further inspection I notice it has a sawdusty aspect inside and sometimes trails of large brown bits of dust literally strung together, usually affixed to the stone.
This happened today! It's really gross and makes me spit, while the aftertaste lingers stubbornly! And expensive! I suspect it's insects and their eggs or faeces but maybe some of you know the specifics? The medjool in the photo below was from the US and shipped to the UK. But I have had this with Algerian and Palestinian dates, too.
What is this? What causes it? Is it during transit that this happens or at the tree before picking? Are some brands in your experience more reliable for quality control than others? I know pitted dates don't have this, but have heard that they are usually steamed, also.
Do you always inspect your dates one by one before chomping? I am getting a bit paranoid now! Drama.
euuuuh im sorry for you haha!
this happened to me while eating plums once and it looked just like that and i was so disgusted afterwards.
i dont know what it exactly is either but seems like it could be eggs..
I had plums straight afterwards in fact - to get rid of the foul taste! Now your reply is going to give me nightmares!! ha ha
hahaha noooooooooo im sorry !!!!
Hmm I need some biology lessons.
Yeah - I've seen in youtube vids how they cover the dates with blankets/cloths... but this can only really prevent the birds I assumed. Also, in addition to eggs/insects, how come the inside of the date goes white and fluffy/sludgy? Do you know what I mean? The mind boggles.
Idk but I've had this happen a couple times recently too. It'd be nice to know what it actually is...
Or NOT nice as the case may be! Sometimes ignorance is bliss, right?
is that primitive nutrition ? watch out for getting too much protein there ;)
Yeah, ha ha ha. Reminds me of Victoria Boutenko... in the first raw book I ever read, one of hers.. she advocated eating insects incidentally.. or at least being relaxed about it, shall I say!
Ugh! Bleagh! Yeah I've gotten some with mold inside from time to time, SOOOOO nasty! I always check them out too. I actually pit them by hand/inspect first and then chow down after I've gone through them, It only takes a few seconds and is worth it! :) I haven't gotten any bad from bautista although I had some from them I kept too long on top of the fridge. But I used to get dates at the supermarket or costco and got a good number of yucky ones in those batches.
Is the white stuff actually mold?? It feels sludgy (and cold) against the tongue, right? I wish Bautista delivered to the UK. I have been relying on supermarkets for dates... I will however investigate some organic wholesalers here.
I'm not entirely sure, I think it would depend on what type of mold, like bread mold is green, etc. But when I had bad dates they had this black dusty stuff inside and were SO nasty! But when I left some beautiful raw dates on top of the warm fridge too long, they began to get little dots on them. At first I thought it was perhaps sugar crystallizing and I continued to eat them for a couple days and didn't notice a change in taste, but as the spots multiplied and grew I finally saw they were a bit fuzzy.
