I really need to share this because it means so much to me and I really want other women to think hard before going on any type of hormonal birth control.
If you have talked with your doctor and have hormonal imbalances that the Pill could help you with, by all means, do what you must.
BUT, if your hormones are fine, please stay away from hormonal birth control if you can help it!
And this is why.
I became a vegan about a year and half ago, and while looking around for vegan forums, soon came across this lifestyle and wanted to give it a try. However, no matter what I did, no matter how well I stuck to the program, I felt fatigued, bloated, and just not better in any way. My skin would clear up while eating high carb vegan, but that was about the only benefit I noticed. I gained weight, even though I've always been naturally thin. I gave up and just went back to eating a regular old vegan diet, with some aspects of what I learned from this lifestyle. HOWEVER..........
I went off the Pill about 2 months ago and switched to a non-hormonal birth control. Within a week, I lost 5 pounds, without even trying! I'm 5'8 and went from 137 pounds (could not BUDGE from there for the longest time, not matter how high carb or calorie restrictive I was) to 132 pounds, and I've leveled off there for now. I was even eating more because my emotional state was terrible for about 3 weeks after quitting the synthetic hormones. Now, I feel great, and I have a renewed hope that this lifestyle could work for me, should I ever decide to put in the energy to give it a serious shot again.
Basically, my message here is this: if you are trying to lose weight on a high carb vegan diet, putting synthetic hormones into your body will most likely not help you. For me, it made me hold on to extra weight that my body didn't need, along with all the other problems I experienced, like lowered sex drive, mood swings, and fatigue. Give yourself the best chance on this lifestyle and ditch the hormones!!
That is all :)
I switched to the Paraguard IUD, which is non-hormonal and last up to 12 years. It was painful to have inserted but a fast procedure. These first couple months have been unusual periods for me, but it's supposed to go back to your natural cycle after about 3 months :)
It's great that you found something that works for you!
However, from my experience, I still lost weight on the Pill. I have, since then, stopped taking it, so we'll see where that leads me!
I'd be interesting in knowing! Keep in touch!
