My kids are 5 & 7 and I have been explaining to them it's not okay to love one animal and eat another. I am contemplating showing them some video's on how "meat" is made. Or at least how the animals are treated prior to. I know it would be life changing for such young minds... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this???
showing them violence i think would be a bad idea. letting them play and interact with animals so that they see them as friends and recognize the life, personality and being-ness behind a different body. the benefits of actually hands on connecting with animals will extend beyond just their eating choices, i think. and if they see you opening up and authentically connecting to animals it will be even easier for them
Your own example is primary. Kids are always watching us, and concepts are far better "caught than taught."
Point out the beauty and fascination inherent in viewing all creatures with respect, from the cutest bunny to the gnarliest spider.
Take them to various rescues where they can hear first hand the sad stories of how the animals came to be there, yet are now loved and cared for.
And yes, depending on your children's maturity level, when you know they're ready, devastating yet true films such as Earthlings (free at www.earthlings.com) are vital.
I agree with Sagar. I was forced to acquire a taste for meat as a kid, and ended up being the biggest meat eater I knew. It was $%#@ up but very much on the easy side to overcome by A) being good friends with a vegetarian and B) (the second time around) finally someone had the balls to say something and I never looked back. Fortunately your kids are young and you're a Mom to them so I would expect it to be instantaneous/automatic.
I am honestly really really excited to see how your story develops! Please tell us!
Well my children have been vegan and vegetarian from birth. I have always told them where meat came from. I also read vegetarian books to them and they saw my animal rights magazines growing up. When their dad would eat meat I would tell them what animal he was eating. They are older now and have never ate any animal flesh.
I never showed them animal films because they make me cry and they are not interested in eating animal flesh. But if they were interested in it I would show them Earthlings.
I see nothing wrong with showing kids films of where animal flesh comes from, some people think it is cruel.
yea never hide reality from or tell myths to children i say if we do we give the pass to domination and don't protect and when they learn the truth will feel a lack of honesty and trust to the parent (blowback)
i would never teach a kid wrong and right but teach them what happens if and when we do stuff. (like point to unhealthy people and connect them to the food they eat) wrong and right thinking:moralism , stands to create violence
owning of animal domestication comes with it's own issues.
Mine (5,4 and 2) have been vegan/vegetarian from birth. I never tell them that eating meat is wrong or that people that do are worse than we are. I tell them the truth, that animals are killed for food. They ask a lot of questions, get upset when they see dead animals in the grocery store and ask why people kill animals. I just tell them that they want to eat them. I lead by example. My kids made up their own mind about eating animals, they think it's wrong just from me telling them meat= killed animals.
life wants to live that one form of life would take the life of others that results in disease. nuff said. some think it wise to avoid pain ;)
