30 Bananas a Day!

I was wondering what the best way or the quickest way would be to ripen bananas , melons, even pears. I tried keeping them in this dark cabinet thing in my house but I guess it was too humid in there and some mold started growing on un-ripened bananas and the melons too . I need info on this please.

I've been told that if you put bananas inside a paper bag they ripen faster. Or wrapped inside newspaper.
I put my fruit in a closet with a little $20 electric heater and keep it at like 78 degrees. Bananas definitely ripen better when warm, as do other fruits I've tried

Yea maybe i'll try the closet thing I do have a heater so that should work

..cool

wow that seems a lot easier..Idk why

i cant think of the super easy way of doing things. Thanks I'll try that

I have a papaya tree. When I see that the fruits are beginning to ripen I pick them then to accelerate the ripening process. I place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple and am able to ripen them perfectly. If I was to leave them on the tree until they ripen bats and birds my get to them.

Fruit gives of the gas ethylene. The more ethylene a fruit is exposed to the quicker the fruit will ripen. A large bunch of bananas will ripen at a quicker rate compared to bananas individually separated. When bananas are shipped from South America to Europe they are picked green and are stored at 10 degrees celcius to slow the ripening process.

To slow the ripening process I wrap bananas in newspaper and place them in a container in the fridge. The skins blacken but the flesh remains firm and probably slows the ripening process a little.

Some fruits will ripen after they are picked and some do not. Watermelon for instance does not ripen after it is picked so if a watermelon is picked and not ripe there's little you can do.

According to my local organic fruit shop if you store your bananas and avocados together they both ripen faster... don't know how much truth there is to that though.

Gracee,

That's true especially if you place them together in a paper bag which increases the amount of ethylene produced. I have used this technique with success many times.
