30 Bananas a Day!

I might be studying abroad in Peru Spring Semester 2012 and I just wanted to know what the fruit situation is like there? So I know lots of fruit can be grown there, but how available/affordable is it and such?

Is foraging possible?

I will be there from February to April...what's in season?

We will go from Lima to Nazca to Arequipa to Lake Titicaca to Cuzco. We'll also take an overnight excursion to the Amazonian jungle.

Anyone have a knowledge of these areas?

thanks! xx <3

Hi Bristol,

I know Peru but wasnt a LFRV when I lived there. However, I live in Bolivia now and am almost 100% LFRV and I have to say that its the best place to be LFRV! I expect its a similar situation in Peru...But speaking of Bolivia the fruit is very cheap (100 bananas for £3).

In the months you will coming it is the end of rainy season so the season is mangos, chirimoya, raspberries, apples, pears, peaches, papaya, bananas (always in season), avocado and I am sure that Peru has many other basic choices.

If you are traveling I would recommend you take with you a blender, I travel a lot for work and this has saved me for falling off the wagon many times. I often make smoothies in my hotel room instead of the hotel breakfast.  The good thing about south america is that they offer real fruit smoothies at most eating places - so I often drink a fruit smoothie with a salad if eating out. You may have to ask them to up the fruit content as in many places there is much more water than fruit.

You will probably also be able to get fresh OJ and coconut water on the street - so take some 1L plastic bottles with you in your backpack when you go out.

Beware they don't consider chicken or fish as meat so its not enough to say 'without meat' if you are ordering food. You will need to ask them to breakdown what exactly the dish is or what they intend to give you...even if its a salad.

Have a great time!

Ana

Cool Ian thanks for the response!

How about foraging in Peru? How likely is foraging? And what are market fruit prices like?

thanks!
