30 Bananas a Day!

Hi all

thought id share some experiences re diet.

as ive progressed on this diet, my calorie requirement has increased. also you want to make it more convenient and not run to the shop every other day for bananas. keeping them in the fridge i have found is not effective as it damages the banana a little / doesnt keep it as fresh

freezing them is a bit of a hassle esp. as you have to thaw them. i prefer to eat banana at room temperature. this technique is most effective in spring/summers when bananas rot faster.

so i got a wine cooler. it is meant for keeping wine preserved at 8 to 14 C degrees. shops typically keep them at 12-14C in cold storage prior to putting it onto shelf.

so now i buy 2-3 13kg boxes and keep 1 box in my wine cooler.

the results of this experiment - it is a huge success. no longer i have to buy 1 box each time saving fuel, time esp as its 30min round trip to the nearest store.  inc unpacking, loading

the wine cooler keeps them fresh for up to 7 days or so if they are purchased a bit green. it is also energy efficient as opposed to using climate control (air con very expensive)

you want to make the diet economical and practical.

we also have 2 fruit eaters in the house, so banana usage is very high

when u finish 1 box out of 3 boxes, you start eating box 2, and the 3rd box you take out of the cooler and will be ready for the next cycle of purchase

make sure u get a medium size cooler.i got one for only $70 off online classifieds as opposed to $250 new.

good stock control of ripe bananas is important.

**other important notes:

any excess stock if it gets spoiling(hard to avoid) keep them in fridge. also keep 2 days of banana stock in the freezer as a backup when banana you buy is a bit too green. also buy small size banana as it ripens quicker.

Woah, stellar idea!

Great out-of-the box (or perhaps in-the-box) thinking, NB.

How much energy do you figure it takes to run, say compared to a fridge?

Very clever, good thinking! :)

Hi Nihal,

I think 12 to 14 degrees celsius is just about ideal to store bananas.

I do freeze bananas frequently however even with frozen bananas I believe it's best to consume them within six weeks of freezing them.
