30 Bananas a Day!

Okay so I know there are discussions about cheap food to eat on rt4 but I dont have many resources and very little money to spend a month on food. I live in Georgia so we have Kroger and Publix, there aren't any Whole Foods near me and there is the occasional Aldi. I also am competetivly training in weightlifting and I also rock climb every day, so calories are a must. I tried to get access to brown bananas to freeze but Kroger never has them no matter who I ask. Ideas anyone? I'm just trying to get the largest amount of calories for my small amount of money... Thanks!

That's ok if there's no whole foods near you- whole foods is extremely pricy. Maybe you can ask an employee at Kroger to see if they sell bananas by the box? Apples and oranges are also fairly cheap. And of course rice, potatoes, pasta... I don't know if you have a yard, but starting a garden will also help provide more calories for free :)

I buy almost all of my produce from Aldi, it isn't organic, but I not everything technically has to be. Like I always buy 4 pineapples and 5 bundles of bananas every week from there. I also don't have a very big food budget, I only have $500 a month for my hubby and I. I just do my best to buy cheep produce. Good luck!!

I have less than $100/month yikes

I could easily get by on that.

Shop around and get to know when fruit and vegetables are priced down.

This may involve more frequent trips to the shops. Buy what's in season and when a fruit or vegetable that you like looks reasonable buy in bulk.

I buy the store brand when it comes to items such as rolled oats, brown rice, tinned tomatoes etc. which are a significant source of calories.

I also agree with Mel Brooks in that Aldi have good deals on fruit and veg almost every week. Keep on eye out on when they price down perfectly good fruit.

Check out the discussions on dumpster diving.  Trader Joe's dumpsters are very good foraging spots.

Drive around and ask people with fruit trees in their yards if you can have some.  Or work out a deal - you pick and keep 1/2 they get 1/2.   Or pay them a bit for it.   I got 1000 s of persimmons from a guy with 2 big trees for 5 cents each for years then he just said I could have them for free.

Check out the want ads or Craigslist for people selling fruit.  Ask farmers if you can buy directly from them, maybe in exchange for some work.  The price farmers get paid for their fruit is way below the wholesale price.  For peaches here in central California, the farmer gets 10 cents a pound.
