I've taught vegn principles to my friends and family for some time now and never had a problem, at all. And some are transitioning over.
If people are "hammering" you then you are probably doing it wrong. And you are getting your ego in there.
I think that's a great check Jeff. In general, if the message is not going over, always check how you are delivering it and even beyond that, what your true motivations are, first.
That said, there are some people who really will jump all over you, the moment they sense you "straying" from convention. So it's not always a "doing it wrong" proposition, but I agree that can be a real stumbling block to progress.
Another thing people often don't really get, even when they are watching out for ego (or they think they are), is that trying to control others will always make for push back, sometimes violent. A lot of people assume that if they are "in he right' then the power of their argument will win the day and that the outcome is inevitable, so they are just trying to help "push things along" and don't realize that what they are actually doing is trying to force others to their will.
It's tough to balance what is right, when you feel compelled and feel the urgency, especially as so many innocent creatures suffer needlessly. Which is why peace movements end up using violence as a means to affect peace, killing to affect life, etc. This is where the rubber really meets the road and one needs to be especially thoughtful as to their actions and words. It's very easy to make the wrong decision(s) in the passion of the moment, flush with the power of the cause.
