Vegan Transition: Is Going Vegan Easy?
I like to talk about how easy it is to go vegan. I mean, you basically only subtract 10 foods from thousands+ plant foods. A plant-based diet still allows you to be social, eat your favorite foods, all the while feeling better every day.
But someone emailed me the other day to say "You wrote that going vegan is so easy. Well, maybe it was easy for you. But for many people, including me, going vegan is NOT easy... That's one case where you are the one who's guilty of "positive thinking". ;)" She went on to talk about how she's struggled for years, even though she really wants to be vegan.
So I wanted to make this video to honor everybody who's trying to go vegan and struggling with the transition. You're not a weirdo or a failure if you haven't been able to do it yet. Maybe you just need some coaching. Maybe you haven't made the right tweak yet that will make it easy and sustainable for you. I trust that if this is what you really want, you can TOTALLY do it, and if there are challenges along the way, that's totally alright too.

Comment by Diana Woodward on January 20, 2013 at 3:41am Nice video Josh! I just became Vegan on 1-6-13.. so, I am not completely raw yet.. still cooking veggies at night sometimes. However, I have lost about 7 pounds in these two weeks. My skin condition I had on my face totally dissapeared and I feel more energy to get up and go now (without caffeine). I used to eat EVERYTHING BAD.. meat, eggs, dairy, you name it! Now I'm bananas and brusselsprouts! Thanks for your videos.. they keep me going!
Comment by Emily on September 18, 2012 at 5:06am My experience with transitioning to a raw vegan diet looked pretty dissimilar to yours from the outside. I became a vegan at 13, and then a raw vegan at 15. In both cases, I transitioned overnight. I didn't have any strong motivating factors for doing so, other than a conviction that it was the best thing to do, and I never wanted (or want!) to settle for second best. In spite of this however, the transition still took time in the sense that I was not entirely comfortable with the decision initially, even though I was too hardheaded to ever fall off the wagon. I was very young, and didn't know how to handle the social aspects well. Being still financially and otherwise dependent on parents who did not understand what I was doing, the effort to sustain my new way of eating was difficult both logistically and emotionally. Now, at 21, I am on my own, and never give much thought to any of the issues that initially caused me so much distress.
The point that I am trying to make is that even those who appear to find the transition to a vegan diet or to a raw vegan diet "easy" may still be struggling internally. I agree that time is all that is needed, assuming that your convictions are strong and deeply rooted.
As for the hair, I like it. I tend to think the more hair, the better. That includes facial hair. As someone who has long, curly/wavy, and just generally unmanageable hair though, I understand the urge to just chop it all off. But I wouldn't.
