What about genetically modified organisms (GMO) in our food supply? What do they mean for our health? What do they mean for our planet?

Comment by Jelle on July 13, 2012 at 10:11pm I have seen several of these documentaries, its very hard to stay objective, the company clearly wants to make money and by ruling over as much food sources as possible they re-ensure this. Governments would probably also love the control over the foods, they can use it as an other "gun" to get people to do what they want. Lots and lots of money to be made here...
However it's actually very hard to find research that GMO is actually damaging for our health, (I am not talking about what it does to our communities and sustainable living). There are enough reasons to not eat GMO foods, but is it actually directly bad for our health...? (if you look at the complete picture the answer is probably yes, but if you look only at the produce of the plants?)
I also think that GMO foods are everywhere, even if we don't eat it directly, most people are likely to eat something that is fed with GMO foods.
Does somebody know the current state in Europa about feeding GMO to livestock? Does the food need to be labelled?
It's also hard to believe one company can become so powerful and has such devastating effects on the way farmers and communities all around the world are living. Its almost to hard to believe...its classic FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt).
I guess that I am probably already eating large quantities of Monsanto controlled food. In the Netherlands there is a company De Ruiter Seeds (its right next to my door <10km) that is owned by Monsanto and they sell seeds for tomatoes, cucumber, bell peppers and some more fruits that I normally eat. I have no idea what they are doing to the seeds, and there is also no way knowing what seed is used for the products I buy at my local market. Even if Monsanto isn't creating GMO foods they will try to make sure to get control over the other seed suppliers around the world....
