His strategy has been successful in him losing weight. Nevertheless he promotes a simple message that 'sugar is bad' and is a modern day villain. Just the right formula in selling books! There is some truth in his writing though, namely that today's diet contains a high percentage of processed foods in which sugars (particularly high fructose corn syrup) and fats are abundant.
Yes, if you wish to lose weight drop the donuts, cakes, cookies, fries etc. Unfortunately fruits are collateral damage in that they are tarnished with the same brush as the crap.
