I think the purpose of the design- the choice of angle and height that doesn't fully resemble flat ground- was simply for convenience of looking nice. Stupid compromise!
Comment by MaRaw DoberVegan on July 21, 2012 at 10:05am I agree with Jonathan and Peter... Nature's platform models flat ground, which is where we are actually supposed to put our humanure- the soil! Our biological needs are not evolutionarily formed to be dependent upon a structure in order to defecate. Go in the forest if possible and your bowels will thank you!
Comment by Peter Csere on June 25, 2012 at 1:00am The "squatty potty" does not provide the proper toilet posture. Only the natural squatting position does, which can be achieved by putting one's feet on the seat or on a sturdy platform on either side of the seat that is level to the seat.
The nature's platform link given in another comment is a good resource.
The squatty potty provides a slightly better posture than sitting, but it's still not the "natural position" in any way and doesn't provide quite as many benefits.

I am using a small chest to use as my squatty potty, works just as well. I admit, I was a little freaked by squatting at first but MAN does it make a world of difference! :)
