How bizarre! One of them was way off key, though :P

This is beautiful! Thanks for sharing, I remember my sister told me about this phenomenon like half my lifetime ago and always wanted to hear it!

Thank you so much for this Kimberly.  This makes me so happy to hear.  One more reason to love crickets.  Years ago I used to have a pet lizard that ate crickets and so I would have about 75 or so in a large bin that I took care of at most times.  As you would guess they only sang when they were happy and if one was lost outside of the bin it would chirp calling out to the others.  I would often have them in my room at night since I liked to fall asleep to their singing.  It was at this time that I became aware how important organic food is, if I fed them non-organic fruit or veggies they would quickly die a horrible nervous system damaged death.

Actually, right now I am taking care of one lonely cricket, hoping to release him once spring arrives.    A few weeks ago someone with a lizard must have moved into my building and had an escapee who found it's way into my apartment.  I saved him from my cats as a juvenile and I am happy to say he has grown into a very healthy adult male living on apple and romaine lettuce.

I know this sounds really 'out there' for most people but since it's winter here, any other option would have been certain death for him.   And since I love crickets, I just couldn't throw him back in the hallway to starve to death or worse.

When he heard the crickets in this video he started trying to get out of his container furiously.  Which normally he may just make one or two feeble jumps and then give up.  I hope spring comes early this year.  :o)

very interesting kimberly. thank you!

there is a definite rhythm due to the even placement of teeth-like projection on the stridulatory organ, from what i understand. it is indeed a curious coincidence that slowing things down like that would produce such a human-like sound.
