I did an online TEFL course (teaching english as a foreign language) before I moved to Madrid so that I'd have a good chance of finding teaching work. It's definitely something to consider..it could be your ticket out of cold climate misery. The fruit in Madrid is simply superior to that of York, and the supermarkets aren't shy about their fruit and veg sections - the first shop I went in here had about 400 big fat melons on display, not to mention all the other fruits. I'm not trying to make you jealous, I'm trying to get you to move haha.
Look up 'Food not Bombs York' on facebook if you have it. They serve vegan food to the homeless, and the people are great. There's a few vegans in that group, they have informal and relaxed meet ups every week, head down and meet them in you have the time.
