Hey that was totally harsh what you said about people using animals ......oh how did you say it....as an emotional attachment instead of dealing with their feelings. And totally true. I'm guilty. Was codependent with a dog I lost last summer and now have a rescue rabbit. Clears throat. Oh well......at least the rabbit can eat my odds and ends of my dinner salads.....
I'm trying to set up a farm in the Virgin Islands, but I am skeptical about it. Bush land is $10-20 thousand per acre. There are 2 developed fruit orchards for sale here, but they want $30-40 thousand per acre. I can rent undeveloped land from the government for $50 per acre per year, but I cannot set up a long-term fruit farm and expect to reap the benefits years from now. I really like what you are doing. What is the price for land in your area? Can you get bananas and papayas to harvest year round? Do annona fruits do well there? Can you harvest strawberries all winter? It looks like there are a number of corporate farms there. Can you get some good distance from them?
I've been meaning to ask you how long you estimate it'll take you to be selfsuffient and are you making a food forest/permaculture? Most fruit trees take atleast a couple of years before they start producing as far as I know.
I'd grow a hell of a lot of watermelons.....Mmmmm, one of my faves *slurp*
Hey Rawbert thanks for accepting my friend request. :) It's so cool to see someone gong after what they want. I'm also going to do something similar here in Denmark and I aim to grow all my own food anyway I can. Hugs Tina
I am having a new weird glitch on the site where I can comment and "like" on blogs but when I try to "like" on discussions it just scrolls to the top of the page and doesnt click and if I try to say something on a discussion, my picture shows up but not the content of my post. Also I cannot send a private message only comment on peoples page....It also works fine from my tablet, just not my home computer. Whats up? Thanks for your help!
Hey Rawbert, I was going to second your response to the fruit flies problem question, but it looks like you closed that discussion. Great response on your part, anyway. No need to kill anything or anyone. Karma is a bitch.
By the way, your new photo looks good, but it is missing something. Where is the banana? Did you eat it? ;)
Hey Rawbert ! Im just back from florida. I went to Pine Island for fantastic ripe organic mango at the MANGO FACTORY the farmer there is very friendly and knows a lot about fruit trees and loves to talk !. His fruit is amazing ! he sells grafted trees(from his trees) w/ suitable root stock to various soils. big spotty ripe mango sweet like thai mango...good luck with your land getting the right root stock may be one of the keys for easy growing...doug
