I totally agree with Northland being great. I wwoofed there in Kerikeri but last time I was up north, the farm wasn't there anymore. But yeah, heaps of wwoofing there. And the weather is great.
Well, except at the moment, it's raining everywhere and getting cold, but hey we're 5 days away from winter... :-)

There's a great organic farm in Wairoa (near Napier) called Bremdale, run by Roger and Rosemary Bremner...they are the LOVELIEST people. There's another great farm near there called Dublar, run by Jon Wichers, he grows some of the nicest organic produce (mostly veggies and apples) coming out of NZ.
For fruit, my favorite place is Northland! Those oranges cannot be beat!!!! Don't know of any particular farms up there, but the WWOOF book obviously does :)

There are about 700 wwoof farms here.
I wwoofed in summer 2004/2005 and loved it. There's a great place in Makarora, a tiny village in the southern Alps, 60km north of Wanaka where I stayed with a really nice family, looking after their B&B, their pony Dudley and had a good time hanging out.

There are a lot of very alternative places here so I'm sure your friend will find some great farms.
